The strangest things will show up when the site is opened at random.

For example, there is: "John Wayne Gacy Death Row Interview: Serial Killers Interview Series." "Raw and uncut," it says. Gacy looks weirdly amused by something. I think I pass on that one.

At least it's only thirty-two minutes. Compare that to "Drunk Woman Gets Arrested For Assaulting Officers During Traffic Stop." Cop body cam footage from New Mexico. Except, it's more than two hours long. Might be useful at a police academy. Otherwise, only good for those who have an Internet connection in prison or a psych ward and need to kill some time.

On a more philosophical note, "I'm Scared That America May Be in it Endgame; Richard Dreyfuss (Part 3!)" "I'm Genuinely Afraid," he says. So why is he more qualified than any of the dozens of people on Lit boards to pontificate about this? Yes, Richard, this was no boating accident.

The whole world is on YouTube. I find it hugely helpful for How To videos, most recently a how to conduct maintenance on a hand blender. It reminds me a bit of the old Adult Education classes there used to be in the UK.

It also tends to recommend BBC documentaries (that's the British Broadcasting Corporation, you dirty minded lot), but that's down to the algorithm working off my previous searches.

I spend a great deal of time on Youtube as it's often my primary means of discovering new bands and singers and the how-to videos are invaluable. It's also a place where I can find updates on my favorite nerdy subjects via subscriptions to content creators who share them. I've NEVER "researched" medical advice or fringe political bullshit.

If you are not careful, you'll find yourself losing some of your dwindling reserves of faith in humanity.

Have to use a VPN for work so the recommendations are random and I assume generally popular. (vpn on a new browser, no login means it's not based on any history)

Police confessions flood the offerings. Russian "drivers" and weird, gratuitous clout chasers round out the misery parade.

Rabbit hole that is youtube is a bit scary unfiltered.

You're absolutely right about the rabbit holes. It's very easy to wander off and find horrors beyond comprehension, or at least good taste. I do my best to just look at the suggested videos that fit my interests only and if my exploration begins to point out other things that I do not want to see I stop looking.

He is 99.999% more qualified to generate clicks which is what youtube is all about.

I do love the educational opportunities youtube has given me but I need to keep their mission in mind for my own mental benefit.

My serious qualm is how a browse or accidental click will ding your history and youtube goes to flooding your homepage with more of it or semi-tangential.

I'll do the work to clear the history of the offender but I'm not 100% confident that actual solves the issue (it does mitigate it greatly tho so I guess it helps.)

Sure, there are some very educational materials on YouTube. Some of the historical information is excellent. I used it to research my Geek Pride entry.

Dreyfuss certainly can generate clicks, but that doesn't mean we should take him seriously.

Yes, I just said that the documentaries can be great. There is just some odd materials mixed in with it.

YouTube is a great source when you need to know how to do certain things, or see what places are like when you’re considering going to them, I have my own channel which is purely Maldives related where I post videos from my trips there to help people decide which islands they want to visit

The record labels I think tried to keep music off of YouTube, but they mostly failed. There are a number of bands and musicians that I've found out of the mainstream but yet they are quite good.

Politics has always been - well, politics. It used to be that the limited outlets for news kept some control on things. It hasn't necessarily gotten worse, but it is is certainly more visible now.

I don't need YouTube to lose my faith in humanity. Anybody watching closely lost it 10,000 years ago. Cars have been crashing into each other since they were invented, and cops have been coercing confessions out of people since before there were professional police forces. The Romans would just crucify you or enslave you and be done with it. It's just now we can see it all.

It's just now we can see it all.
It's a combination of factors.

We've experienced some of the leave tumultuous times in history so there's more expectation of calm or peace to be disrupted.

We've alleviated some of our worry by putting faith into a social fabric that fails large portions of our communities on the regular. We'll take the devil you know over random chaos a la the Wild West.

Fear and disillusionment have been monetized. Crime statistics have trended better for decades but we're more frightened and isolationist than ever.

Misery and cruelty isn't new but we've developed an efficiency and marketability to it. We've Oppenheimer'ed it.

Mine's pretty much all meme compilations and restoration/sawmill/woodturning/fine art restoration/lockpicking from the rabbit hole I fell down doing research for a story that never got written. LOL

Every once in a while something else will come up, but I've pretty much overloaded the algorithm. I have another account I don't use very often that I blink into whenever nothing interesting is coming up on my main account.

Now I'm going to make some dinner and watch the latest episode of Baumgartner Restoration. :)

That particular one might be because you were looking at another interview with a murderer a few days ago: https://forum.literotica.com/thread...e-stars-and-really-miss.1587016/post-96876593

But YT does try to drive viewers towards more sensational content, even if they've never clicked on that kind of thing.

It is scary and so much of it is propaganda.

I tend to watch react channels, restoration channels, how to for repairs every now and then, building weapons from big rusted chains (sounds paranoid but is really soothing) and Ozzy Man for his Destination F videos.

Add in a healthy dose of speculative fiction videos, art videos, true crime and various comedy bits (old and new) and that’s pretty much me sorted.

I watch more on Youtube than on any other streaming service. Some of the YT channels I subscribe to are really good considering they’re semi-amateur … sort of like the authors on Lit.
