I'm re-reading James Q. Wilson's classic treatise on bureaucracies.

Alcohol, Tobacco, & Firearms seems to exist to serve organized crime and police....the clients who fret the most about civilians possessing weapons.

The part about it being not open for discussion.

What if it should be infringed?

That is when we revolt. Simple.
The 2nd Amendment is there to keep the Govt. of the U. S. from becoming oppresive.

There are 4 boxes to be used when dealing with Gobt. Soap, Ballot, Jury, and Ammo. Use in that order!

The government got fighter jets, missiles and tanks. Good luck w that.

Simple?

If they are doing enough to cause a real revolt, a large chunk of the military will go with their families.

Look at what happened to the best officers in the Army at the beginning of the Civil War. Most resigned and joined their home states.

They're also assuming that every common citizen with a weapon will rise up against the government at the same time.

It never seems to occur to them that a lot of people may support the government. And they'll be armed as well.

For example, if the current government decided to 'crack down' and made 'liberalism' illegal I can't see any of the usual suspects here pulling out their guns to protect the 'liberals', Rather, they'll take it as a license to kill.

You might be surprised.
A strict constructionist would revolt because that is not acceptable from either side. Of course the left is much more worried about gun ownership than the right. Maybe it's because they need to be? Could their intrusive programs really be unpopular?

By what right do you, or any other person stand on, to regulate, control, restrict, license or forbid, anything I possess or consume or acquire?

The right to LIVE!
The right to feel secure in my own home!
The right to be able to walk down the street without fear!
Is that too much to ask for?

It isn't the legal ones that we have to worry about, anyone going through the proper channels usually WANT instruction, WANT training on proper care. No one should be allowed to carry firearms on their person unless they are law officers period! Hunters use their guns during specifically assigned times, you have to get a permit to use them here. To own a registered gun you have to go through the licensing process which includes a number of training hours if I'm not mistaken. I feel all guns should be licensed and registered with the police/government.

Actually to satisfy the Federal requirements you just have to fill out the ATF form. That form stays on file at the business you bought the weapon from. The only time police even have the right to look at it is when investigating a crime. To buy a pistol there is a half assed background heck and a 3 to 5 day wait. Any other restrictions are state or local.

I'm from Canada, when one of my son's friends was applying for his hunting license he had to put in so many hours at the rifle range-not saying Im an expert in any way shape or form. Maybe there should be less half-assed stuff going on and there would be alot less half-assed shooters out there!

Don't mix up your firearms, thier uses, and the inteligence or stupidity of the person holding it.

For a farmer or rancher a rifle and shotgun are tools to save livestock and lives, strapping on a revolver or pistol is done when you need your hands free. Everthing from a rabid coyote to a poisonous snake could take away your livestock or the lives of your children. In your home and on your land firearms are YOUR business. Instruction and safety passed from parents to children at what time the parents feel is right.

Same for the homeowner in the suburbs, here the danger walks on two legs and may kick in the door.

On the streets with a pistol or revolver is different.

In texas:
You have the 3 day waiting period, that's national. For a firearm to protect your home there is no licensing or anything.

To get a concealed carry permit for a handgun the regulations are pretty tough.
No felony criminal record, when I got the permit it was 18 hours of instruction, safety and when, what, where you can carry, and use your weapon. The test at the firing range was the last part. Everyone knew the safety, and the test was to see if you could use the weapon you applied for the permit to get. You could either get smaller caliber handguns up to a 38 caliber, or what I got was the one where I can carry any caliber, by firing a 9mm at the proficiency test.

I know where I can legally carry my handgun, under what circumstances I can use it, and that I can hit my target. During the safety and insruction we were also taught (if you didn't know) that we were likely going to hit anything behind or to the side of the target.

There may be idiots who would fire at a robber with a knife who has a school bus behind him. But most idiots are the same as the criminals, no concealed carry permit, no instruction or safety or proficiency, no 3 day waiting period when you buy the gun off a guy named "KillerB" on a streetcorner.

Thats how it is in texas.

Most state require a hunter safety course to get a hunting license. That has nothing to do with the purchase of a firearm.

I would be interested to see the crime statistics of Texas (where, though difficult, you can get a concealed carry permit) and California (where you just plain can't, unless you bribe the Orange County sheriff). I'd like to see if it has a positive effect on violent crime. I have to believe that it does, if for no other reason at least a few more rapists have their brains blown out because of it.

Violent crime in America is same on same. Show me a white victim, I'll show you a white criminal. Show me a black criminal, I'll show you his/her black victims. The carrying of concealed weapons is probably of minimal significance. What you get is low crime in the prosperous suburbs and high in the inner cities. Check the demographics. So sad.

I lived, for a time, in New York City. NYC has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country. It is damn near impossible for an average citizen to get a permit to possess a firearm. [That's right, possess. And that's despite the second amendment.]

NYC has a high rate of gun crimes, despite the total ban. There is also a thriving street market for firearms.

You want a gun, including concealed carry in NYC? Don't bother about gun safety, just worry about your political connections. You got political connections, you got a gun. No political connections, no gun.

An armed citizen is a citizen. An unarmed citizen is a slave.

There was a small town where a guy with an assault rifle started shooting people. He was also shooting into the police station and had them pinned down.

A guy with a concealed carry permit shot the bad guy. Bad guy wearing body armour gets up and shoots the guy with a concealed carry permit.

Bad ending.

And the most restrictive firearms laws in America, the ones the Supreme Court struck down, was in Washington, D.C., the second most violent city in the country.

As a Canadian, I know little about U.S. gun laws and our perspective here is at least somewhat skewed because of sensational headlines about gun violence south of the border... so -- could someone please explain to me how it works. Let's say a guy wakes up one morning and decides he wants to legally buy a handgun. How easy or difficult is it for him to do that legally? Does it vary from state to state, city to city or is there a national law that governs it?

You can buy one that day, but you have to wait three days to have it in your possession, and a criminal background check will be run before you have it in your hands.

There is no consistancy from locale to locale. Those places where the 'Progressives' dominate politically tend to be very restrictive. Where Conservatives reign, the laws are quite a bit looser. The book of local firearms laws is as thick as a summer beach novel.

Thanks, both of you. That's sort of how I thought it worked but wasn't sure.

But ........ um ........... I can tell from your AV that you are a monkey, the laws concerning animals with firearms are a lil stricter, even in texas.
