Aprils thread made me curious. I am almost certain that someone has done this kind of thread before, but fuck it.

Tell me about your on-line history. Your first chat. Your first cybersex (if ever). Where did you hang out? What did you do? How did you end up here? Do you see any patterns?

I am not interested in generic ways in which the internet has changed your life and social habits, I am more interested in the story of your on-line life.

wow.. well, that's a history in and of itself

but the first time I chatted online, I was over at my Mom's house in early 1997. She'd bought a webtv and here we all were gathered in the big great-room of her house surfing the web... when suddenly we happened upon a chat room. The name of the chatroom was "Mikesweb" I think... and my handle was "starlite"... fashioned by my Mom. It quickly became an obsession.

Then, we happened upon Bianca. Omygod.. it was all over for me then. I was in the Bedroom, the Bathroom, the Z-room, and chatting all over the place, posting all kinds of shit. I was out of control, honey.. lol

then I found a place called the "Soapbox" on Bianca, which was a BB. I sat my ass there for quite some time posting about political, socioeconomical, and sexual things until the owner chose to shut it down.

Since then, I haven't been in an honest-to-God chatroom in some time. But, never say never, hmm?

My first net experience was with a local provider in Germany. Not bad, and I only used it for email and limited surfing. I wasn't hooked then, as I am now. I then moved on to AOL, which was pretty cool at the time. I spent time in some of the chat rooms, and had cyber sex a couple of times, just to see what the big deal was about. *yawn*

Then AOL pulled some sneaky shit, and I left. I don't remember much after that until I got back to the states. We signed up with AOL again, but I didn't spend as much time on it as I used to. I was busy exploring the web outside of AOL. That's when I found Lit. Once I made my way to the board, it was all over for me. LOL

I don't like chat rooms. They go too fast. I've spent a little time at other boards, but of course, I keep coming back here. Rather sad, actually. ;)

I spent a few of my initial months chatting it up then I discovered the newsgroups.

I spent a hell of a lot of my time downloading stuff and hanging on irc downloading stuff there too.

Then I joined a few bulletin borads. Later was appointed to moderate some forums which I still do today in some fashion. My favorite board had a hentai section on it. Guess who was the number one contributor to that!

I kept wanting more and more erotic stuff. Then I found erotic stories.

Only a few months ago did I find Lit. I didn't come to the board until a few months later.

I was once an operative in the KGB. The secret heirarchy of my comrades in the Spetznaz had put a microcomputer in my brain. I was searching for Carlos and our best leads thus far had been the Bourne Identity. After the Cold War ended I branched out from US operations to a European theatre. I used the Internet to make my connections with fellow comrades. It was a simple thing, really, with the computer in my brain. My first connection was with a dark-eyed Austrian girl in a chat room dedicated to horticulture. We pretended interest in gardening. My superior in the KGB was addicted to American Pornography and insisted that we meet in a chat room for that purpose, Russian Vixens in Love it was called. Comrade Tovarisch was fired for that. Eventually I came to know bulletin boards, they were much better for exchanging messages. I discovered erotic sex stories and this innocuous bulletin board. My comrades have taken away my American Express and are threatening to remove my computer so that I will not be here instead of chasing Carlos. We did catch him in the last decade, but still they insist.

my first on-line experience was with Prodigy. way before AOL. with an 800 baud modem. no pics, no chat rooms just text and some really crude line art that could take as long as 30 min to download one page. Then there was AOL 1.2..... OMG..... I was hooked. The first chat rooms back then were a lot different. 90% of all chatters were over the age 25 and there were no "bots" then. I found a "local" room and spent much of my time there. Once a month, the regulars would usually meet at a bar and party. Those were my first times to meet people from on-line. It was really neat back then. That is also how I met my wife. Back then you had to pay by the minute for access. it was nothing for me to run up a 3 or $400 bill a month in those days.
I did the cyber thing back then a few times. But I always found it easier and better to just pop open a Playboy if I really wanted to masturbate. I didnt have to take breaks to type something!!
Finally my wife and I lost interest and cancelled our accounts. About 9 months ago I got a new computer with free access. It had AOL Instant messanger on it. I thought I would try it. My how the chats had changed while I had been away........ and not for the better. Then I was "found" by someone there. We have become really great friends in the last few months. She turned me on to Lit and the rest is history.

My first internet experiences was with Compuserve... This was before AOheL had bought up the company. I used to do a good deal of roleplaying chat. Then I got into Local BBS's... which was fun for a while. Then it was Newsgroups... From there, I got interested in a chat program called "Palace;" this is where I first cybered. *Sigh* Memories. Then I was off line for a while... and when I came back, Dragonette, a friend I made on Palace, suggested I submit my first erotic story to this site. And so, now, I'm here.

I was the head administrator for three commercial Palace sites.
Korn, Macy Grey and South Park

Palace was my first online experience…
I began to make avatars that had to match South Park's style exactly..which led into my graphic designer career.

And there is where I learned so much about community..

Still am..

I started online with IRC back in 1992. I was in college at the time and IRC was the clear shit. I mainly chatted with people on the Canada channel and sometimes the Nova Scotia channel. I met some interesting people there and some really weird ones from my own university. Kind of fun prowling the campus trying to track down exactly who you were talking to :)

From IRC, I ended up going to Yahoo and created an identity that still sticks with me today. Believe it or not, I've actually kept in contact with one person the entire time. Although we don't get to chat as often now, I still get cards updating me on how things are in his life.

In the early days, I tried cyber sex (who hasn't?) but it never really did anything for me. The closest I get to cyber now is the occasional flirting on the board.

I ended up here one night when I was looking for erotic stories. I'm sure I spent a lot of time exploring this board that night :D I registered in July of 2001 and I haven't been able to pull myself away since :D

They used to use Buggy whips

My first chat was in 1972 from Urbana IL

An early CAI system that was hooked up to universities all over the world. It was very large, why there were many thousands of users, ha ha.

You know, there were romances and fights. It has since grown in numbers and graphics but I'm not sure what else.

oops, I may have dated myself!!!

was banned from chat

You were banned from chat?? LOL, what for? I didn't know this, where in the hell was I? I need to hear this! :D

My first online experience was back in....95 or 96 I think. It was in a danish chatroom with a friend of mine. Just shooting the breeze.
I didnt get my own until late 98 and it was with TDK (tele Denmark Comminications (Communication is spelled with a K in Danish).
Found lit one day bored at work and has been dropping by ever since.

wow am I a novice..

I had aol around 95 but it was on this little mac with only 8mb or whatever...so I could only use it for email and chat. I was a little creeped out by the chat but became intrigued and chatted in those aol chat rooms for a couple months before it began creeping me out again.
<edited to add that I obviously got a new computer that could accomodate actual surfing...>
Then I stumbled upon Lit. and read stories for months...decided to take a weak stab at writing and at some point some months ago decided to check the boards out.

I had no idea what a bulletin board was and I'm not sure I do now.

Boring, boring, boring. Not even sure why I posted I guess, but now that I've typed all this I'll at least make you suffer another glance at the nipple should you choose not to read the post.

I first got online in spring 1997; it only took about a month to get into the swing of things, and I was in chat rooms (Lycos) and on ICQ pretty much all the time. Chat rooms bored me pretty quickly, but I'm still on ICQ occasionally.

My first cyber happened pretty quickly after I got online, and I can't say I found it all that interesting.

I've had a variety of different online "hangouts" - I definitely have a pattern - find a board/site/community I like, get completely and totally hooked, stick around for about a year, get bored, move on to the next one. (Which, of course, makes me sound like a drifter, but really, I keep in touch with the friends I make along the way... I'm actually still talking to some of the people I first made friends with in chat rooms back in '97.)

A former co-worker of mine introduced me to Lit a few months ago... I didn't even venture onto the boards till about a month ago, and after lurking for a few weeks, figured I'd register finally... and here I am. :) I have a feeling this place is going to become my next addiction, heh.

Some friends of mine had a computer.. back in 94. We used to "chat" in a local chat room run by another one of our friends. I can remember trying for hours to get online. I didn't get addicted until 97 when my SO bought me a "ghetto puter" (webtv) for my birthday. Another friend sent me a link to a chat room that he chatted at. And I got addicted. At the time I owned a small video store in a very small town. I was there 11 hours a day.. 7 days a week. I finally had something to do besides watch boring old movies.

I learned all I could with the webtv.. I learned to build my first webpage (good god what a bitch that was) and made alot of new friends. I found Lit while still on the webtv. But didn't register for the board until about a year ago. I just read the stories... I think I went into chat a few times.. not sure.

In 1999 I closed the video store and starting spending less and less time online. In Feb of 2000 I bought myself a "real computer". I got back into the webpage building (had a whole new way of doing it to learn). The chat room I was going to shut down.

Found my way back to Lit... registered for the board.. and the rest is history.

A little of my history

I have always been good with computers and stuff, always enjoyed it and used them whenever I could, but did not begin on-lining it untill late 94 / early 95. Several of us were at friend's house and taking turns chatting.

Then a buddy of mine bought a computer and got on-line. "Let me show you what the internet is all about. He took me to bianca's smutshack. This is where I adopted the name "riff." His was "Dash" (short for his fav band 'Dash Rip Rock). I chose riff because I liked the way it sounded. Simple but with a certain vibration to it (like the name Earnest, perhaps? heh). Then we got a program called "Pow Wow" which is very similar to ICQ.

At bianca's I went to many places. I started, like most perverts, in the bathroom, but later found the kitchen and foyer. I finally kind of settled in Malaclypse room. It was then that they began having memberships. This guy had a forum that I participated in. One day he got pissed off and shut it down. So I picked it up. How long? 2 years? I think... it was a lot of fun, but I got into a big dispute that was instigated by a craphole named "Cat" (what a bitch). Then someone else jumped my shit about my vision for the forum. Next thing u know, I was not having fun being a moderator. I offered to give it away to a few other people, but they weren't interested, so I just let it die. I made some good friends though. I even met one in London on my home from Moscow.

This is when my russophilia began. I got ICQ and all of that. I spent a year chatting with my Russian friends and at their board. Still do, but hardly do "chat" at all.

I found lit through a friend. Registered and posted some, quite modestly actually because I was obsessed by Everquest. Then around Christmas I came here more often and now spend more time here than on Everquest. It's very much like in EQ to me in some ways (but very different too). I still wish I could play EQ with people I know from here. Think it would be a blast.

All through I have been professionally involved with "on-line" stuff. I've come a long way from cybersex. Me and Dash DP-ed my London friend in the bedroom. heheheheh. Now I teach and build wide-area networks. I figured, with all the porn out there, I might as well develop a career where it could all be at my fingertips....

My journey began in 1983 on Compuserve through I think Ohio State University. Man did it seem strange. Placing that damn phone headset in it's little cradle. Then I started doing bad things.........

I never could resist you, Laurel, I cannot live a lie...

The truth is that I am Jimima West, great-great granddaughter of Jim West, of the United States Secret Service. I came online to continue my love affair with Swan, that's the President's wife, in secret. We couldn't be together, for obvious reasons, so we come here to secretly flirt love each other. She'll kill me for revealing this, but I cannot live in shame a moment longer. Our love is a pure, wonderful thing and I simply don't care if Libby Dole is running for senate. What is politics in the face of love? Nothing! Like the marine and his Princess, our love will conquer America. She comes here as p_p_man and we have our own special dance of cybersex that involves tertiary parties and false lambasting of the US and Eagle. Did you know that "Bush is an idiot" means "I adore the very ground you walk upon?" Our code is so sweet.

"Go toss back a pint and fall off your barstool, dickface." (I love you my darling!)

Commodore 64, 300 baud. I damn near died and went to heaven when I could finally afford the 1200 baud. Lots of local BBS's. Then the net, gopher, a few sites. Like someone said, no pics, sounds, frills. All text.

Never did go with anything like Prodigy et al.

Now, Beep Beep. I can not even imagine what the next 20 years is going to bring.

But, when they come out with the holo deck, don't look for me. I'll be very busy. :D

I take that back…

Palace was when I got my first computer around 95…then began my very own experiences out here.

But a computer has lived in my home since 1985. Long before I ever thought I would want to own one and hang out in cyberspace at all.

I considered it escaping your real life for a virtual one. Remember when Donahue would have guests on saying that their computer ruined their marriage..citing that their mate left them for a cyber new one they met in a chat room?

My husband was building the first mudds and muses on The Well, writing books with Howard Rheingold, and building interactive gameson green and black text monitors…a 386, I believe.

The Well was where everybody hung out. My husband was always telling me that cyberspace was going to change the World as we know it. That young people would have cyber relationships maybe before they had real ones.

That new kinds of communities would exist in the virtual World.
And I watched all of this over his shoulder..

Now I am in love with my computer.

Could you imagine being without your computer, now?
Your connection to this vast World..living through these copper wires?
