The first one has always made my skin crawl, and it's brilliant. On the third one, I've never been able to get past my kneejerk reaction which is, "duh." What am I missing?

Thank you. I never considered that "living" might be used here as other than "the ones who are alive." It clicked when you added the italic highlight.
