thanks- have you cooked them yourself? which method do you prefer?

over here, they never show oysters being cooked

I've only ever had fried oysters. They aren't bad! I'm a fan of any fried food that comes with a dipping sauce. lol

Just put the live ones on the grill over medium heat. When the shell pops open, they are ready for us slurpers. For you non-slurpers, just wait another minute or so for them to fully cook but not dry out.

they do sound tasty that way. i'm hoping the texture's an improvement over how they are raw

Cajun and Creole relatives eat oysters:
Raw
Raw with minced garlic and lemon
Raw with hot sauce
Grilled with butter
Grilled with butter and garlic
Grilled with butter, garlic, and parsley
Shucked, battered, and deep fried with sauce on the side
Shucked, battered, deep fried, and part of a Po Boy
Shucked and part of jambalaya and gumbo....

Me:
No thanks

oh crap, now i feel guilty - killing them slowly in their own steam? broiling them alive :(

so is it their flavour or texture that's an issue for you? or allergy?

I don't like seafood, shellfish, or fish in general. It's one of those things that, no matter how well it's prepared, the taste makes me want to gag. And since my wife's stopped smoking, my senses of smell and taste have elevated substantially, to where I can taste the anchovies in Worcestershire sauce

i watch a fair number of cookery shows on and off, especially loving masterchef - but never seen any of them cook an oyster! day, though, they didn't show anything but mentioned they guy had made an oyster mayonnaise,so i didn't know if he'd cooked them first but assumed he had.

that's a shame - about your not liking seafood; it's great that your wife quit smoking though!

prawns - god, love me some prawns - cooked, legs pulled off, head twisted off, hold the tail and enjoy their crunchy goodness

Why is it a shame? I used to eat it every Friday, Lent or not, until it tasted terrible to me at 14. There are people that don't like some of the stuff I do, like gawumpkies (without sauce!) or Pasta e fagioli (A Lenten staple for me when I was following).

because, for whatever reasons, your tastebuds don't dance like mine do when i eat it - i think that's a shame since you're missing out on something that makes me happy :) i like people to enjoy all life has to offer - yet i still can't see me eating fresh oysters. it was without a doubt their texture that put me off as much as it did.

wow! :D

how would you describe their texture when cooked, lori? something like the softness of mussels, or meatier like the scallop?

More on the soft side. The stew's my personal favorite, but I never met an oyster I didn't like!

oyster poboys. my goodness. heaven on a roll.

raw with lemon and horseradish. divine.

oysters make me all kinds of happy.

Fish, when I ate it, didn't give me pleasure. I also don't miss out on the after-taste and bad breath from it.

Yum 2x's

Traditional culinary wisdom says oysters should be consumed raw, I say eat what you like, anyway you like. Fried oysters, like fried clams are awesome.

Last nights dinner, it was that kind of day.

I have a hard time imagining that lobsters and crabs have anything that is related to spiders. Or, crayfish.

Then, again, they have so many legs.

Buttery Butt! You could have a plate of crawfish!

What is a White-clawed crayfish ?

The White-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) is the UK’s only native crayfish species - the White-claws originate from the UK whereas other crayfish species have been introduced from other countries. Since the 1970s there has been more than a 50% decline in the areas where White-claws occur in England and Wales and they are still declining rapidly both in numbers and in the places where they are found.
