I was watching TV the other night and i think it was Law and Order. On the show they hooked up with an internet private eye for lack of better terms. They were able to go into the internet and pull out stuff on anybody they wanted to. They traced stuff on a guy they were after.

For a min this botherd me because I'm not sure I would like EVERTHING I've ever done on here to be exposed. For instance.....if your SO decided to put out some money, they could have your internet chats etc. made public.

Does this bother anyone here?

Or is there anyone here who has had it done to them?

Nope, can't say it bothers me.

I don't say anything on the net that could hurt me. And people in my life already know I like erotic art and manga.

It was Law & Order.

It does bother me a bit, however, I don't generally reveal a lot of information here or anywhere. However, someone having a list of all the websites I've visited does bother me. It won't stop me from going to them, but it's there in the back of my head now.

Also, this just defeats the whole purpose of "unregistered" posts doesn't it?

It does and it doesn't. In the purest sense, of course it bothers me, but I just don't really have anything bad on-line. It doesn't bother me compared to surveilance that could be done with someone listening to me right now.

you got it

Yes, It bothers me too somewhat. Hell I've been on the internet for years and have visited lots of weird sites. Probably being here at LIT would be the least of it. I haven't posted anything really BAD or entered into PM's that i would be worried about. But crap, over the years, I'm sure there is stuff that would come back to haunt me if it were traced. Now I'm wondering if this is the start of one of the ways companies might look up potential employees.

It bugs me, yeah, but I also know that it would be a handy tool in catching criminals. I personally would not like to see the technology used by anyone but government regulated organizations, such as the police, but I know it's likely to happen. There are ways to protect yourself from being traced too easily, if you want, but there is alot of tracing going on. Cookies are just one form.

Yep, them cookies are killers. People can find out all the sites you go to from them. Unless you have an anti cookie program. Cookies also contain passwords an stuff too so you gotta be careful of people seeing and getting a hold of your cookies too.

Cookies have some good uses...I don't have to manually log into all the boards I visit everytime I'm there :)

The problem is how in the hell do you be carefull? I mean besides getting one of those programs that wipes them out. And even then I'm sure someone can hack their way in. Fuck this is just makin me wonder even more.

Oh well still got some T-shirts left if anyones interested.

Well you just do the best you can. You'll never be completely safe anywhere in the world.

All it takes is persistence and patience and any kind of firewall, passwords or protection can be broken, cirvumvented and bypassed.

Just don't use the computer for anything important.

There's a thought. I know people have confided things to me that they don't want public. Personal rather than criminal, but deeply so. I'd be ill if anybody got hurt on account of my employer digging for something against me.

10 years from now, the corporate temptation will be greater, because more information will become available as this becomes a greater part of people's lives. That will inceasingly be a useful tool.... . Has the guy bitched about the boss, cheated on his spouse, does he secretly smoke cigarettes? Does he visit gambling sites? Is he sexist? Not crimes, but may be of interest to the CORP. in light of their policies... Did he fabricate a reason for a day off? Masturbate on company time? Years of internet history might disclose these things.

I hope the standards for this remain as stringent as wiretapping, but that may not mean much during a nebulous war on terrorism.

I could NOT agree more with you Patient. This computer shit is good to a point but I know years down the line so many people will be burned by the Corp. Govt. whatever going into our lives and looking at what makes us tick.

Time to do snail mail again
