You think?

I often sit and think of something only to find that what I'm thinking about is nothing...but how than could I think? For if nothing is someting I'm thinking about, than whatever that nothing is has to be something, right?

(Am I using "than" in the right context this time?)

Something

if you thought it, it's something--your thought! Jot it down and come back to it and maybe it won't seem so insignificant later.

And in the context you are using (cause-effect) you want "then." The other, "than," is used with with comparisons (e.g., bigger than a breadbox).

And it's all relative--I have the opposite problem: I thing everything is goddamn significant. ;)

'Mind' is an abstraction. 'Nothing' is an abstraction, even 'idea' is an abstraction. So whatever you were doing was an abstraction inside an abstraction.

If I had been there when Descartes said, "I think..." I would have interrupted him right there and said, "Prove it!"

Maybe I Think Too Much

Kdog stop goin all metacognitive-like! This thread made me think of this song.

Think Too Much by Paul Simon

They say that the left side of the brain
Controls the right
They say that the right side
Has to work hard all night
Maybe I think too much for my own good
Some people say so
Other people say no no
The fact is
You don't think as much as you could
hmmm

I had a childhood that was mercifully brief
I grew up in a state of disbelief
I started to think too much
When I was twelve going on thirteen
Me and the girls from St. Augustine
Up in the mezzanine
Thinking about God

Maybe I think too much
Maybe I think too much
Maybe I think too much
Maybe I think too much

Have you ever experienced a period of grace
When your brain just takes a seat behind your face
And the world begins The Elephant Dance
Everything's funny
Everyone's sunny
You take out your money
And walk down the road

That leads me to the girl I love
The girl I'm always thinking of
But maybe I think too much
And I ought to just hold her
Stop trying to mold her
Maybe blindfold her
And take her away

Maybe I think too much
Maybe I think too much
Maybe I think too much
Maybe I think too much

Anyway I think it's a good song.

An Abstraction From What?

Rene D. was doing philosophical reductionism, or in poetic terms "minimalism".
Kdog, I would ask you from "what" are things like "mind" and "nothing" and "ideas", et al "abstracted"?

My favorite conundrum for some time has been: "The end does not justify the means." If the end does not, what does? - I will not accept a teleological argument. ;)

P.S. In reality I am an "Ordinary Language Philosopher". I follow O.K. Bowsma and L. W.'s last works.

Actually, they are extruded like sausage links.

Also, who says that I accept the statement "the ends do not justify the means"?

Descartes may have proved his existence to himself, and anyone else may prove their existence to themselves with this reasoning, but it cannot prove their existence to another.

That makes me wonder.

Sometimes when I wander I wonder if I should be wondering while I'm wandering or if it would be better to stop wandering while I'm wondering. So I do. But then since I've already wandered, I really have no choice but to wander back, and then I can't help but wonder if while I'm wandering back I'll wonder or simply wander without wondering. I wonder if there is such a thing as too much wondering and wandering. I wonder.

Big Bang crunched (hope this helps) :)

Big bang crunched

No beginning to no end, cognitive existence extends.
Chaotic conflux of infinite infinitesimal particles,
range from one indeterminate frontier to another.
Curves curve on themselves coiling in fuzzy shapes,
communicating forces in a constant flux
in all possible dimensions of time and space.

Each and every progress in every direction,
reveals an even wider vista to survey,
pushing the known periphery further away.
This perpetual totality will not extinguish,
while any observation and thought exists.

And in the same vein as OT's uh thoughts....

To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering one must not love, but then one suffers from not loving. Therefore, to love is to suffer, not to love is to suffer, to suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love, to be happy then is to suffer but suffering makes one unhappy, therefore to be unhappy one must love or love to suffer or suffer from too much happiness. I hope you're getting this down...

Oh and applauding Zhuk's poem! Did you just write that?

If we define the word 'Eternity" :

*a seemingly endless or immeasurable time
*endless time; time without limits
SYLLABICATION: e·ter·ni·ty
PRONUNCIATION: -tûrn-t
NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. e·ter·ni·ties
1. Time without beginning or end; infinite time. 2. The state or quality of being eternal. 3a. The timeless state following death. b. The afterlife; immortality. 4. A very long or seemingly endless time:

Most agree that eternity has no limits. But don't we impose a limit by defining it. How can we difine that which has no limit without adding a limit. But wouldn't that make the definition invalid since the definition states that there is no limit while placing a limit. It's basically stating that it's this and no more. Yet it's much more.

Made of what? And encased in what?
Made of ephemera, and as everybody knows, an ephemerum exposed to the air develops a skin like pudding.

Angeline

If this is the case, (and more than likely it is) I could never suffer enough...
