It's hard solid wood with a set of 4 ridges carved in the back. I have no idea what it is about those ridges, but damn do they hurt.

i like the brush. The ridges provide more surface area impact for the total strike, but have a valley on either side for the first taste. You get a "dig" and then an "explosion." Make sense?

I took a closer look at it last night, and it actually has a set of 8 grooves, not 4 like I said, very close together.

Your comment makes sense though. Other hairbrushes simply don't hurt as much as this one.
