It could be because people know if they search for key phrases in your posts that they will have to wade through hundreds of cross posts on right wing blogs/forums/"news" sites to maybe find the original source that, in all likelihood, will turn out to be wrong anyway.

its NOT that that they cant look it up

its that they want YOU to post a link, so that the LINK can be discredited with whatever means available

No, the best-informed, most broad-minded Litsters' attitude is, "If you claim it, you should be ready to prove it. Don't try to make me do your research for you, asshole."

Which is exactly the same as the attitude of, well, anybody anywhere with any lick of common sense.

This seems like a long winded and wordy way of saying, "citation please?"

Have you ever seen that bumper-sticker that says "Cite?"?

It was inspired by the frequent cite-requests on the Straight Dope Message Board (a spinoff, as it were, of the The Straight Dope column ("Fighting Ignorance Since 1973! (It's taking longer than we thought)") of Chicagoan Cecil Adams (or Ed Zotti, that's a matter of endless debate), which you might have seen in free weekly tabloids like Creative Loafing or The Weekly Planet.) And the SDMB sets the gold standard for messageboards. (I post there as BrainGlutton, for many years now.) If you can't bring the cite, you'll be laughed off the page, as you should be; and if you take the attitude miles is expressing here, the Mods will probably and fairly ban you from the board. (miles wouldn't last a week on the SDMB, not even if he limited himself to posting only in the BBQ Pit forum, the only Dope forum where direct insults are allowed -- even that has rules, and you can get banned for breaking them repeatedly after Mod-warnings. Which miles would.) If you want to assert something, you always have to bring the cites yourself, that's only reasonable.

Go thou and do likewise.

Sure. After the person who made the assertion brings the cites.

Really, this is as if you were to sue me for breach of contract, without providing the contract or even alleging when or where an oral conract might have been made or what were its terms, and then said, "Prove you didn't breach it!" You'd be laughed out of court, even small-claims court.
