I want to talk Yoga at the gym but I worry that I'll suck really bad at it. I know the idea is to keep going and improve. Any suggestions?

I did yoga for a couple of years, probably the best part of 20 years ago and I must say I've never felt healthier in my life - before or since. Must get back into it when I've lost some more weight.

It's not possible to "suck" at yoga. If at any moment you are at your limit (be that a limit of flexibility or a limit of strength), you are doing it well! The only thing that changes is your limits, over time.

Try and approach it with a non-competitive ethos - I mean, not even being competitive with yourself. It's a meditative, slow form of exercise that is done best and most beneficially by a person who sees the focus with which the moves and poses are done as an end in itself.

Go for it!

Plus there might be some cute girl butts in the class!

If it is so good why do you want to lose more weight before you start?

Cos I ain't getting my obese flabby enormity out in public (classes) in t-shirt and leggings.

I am at a weight where NOBODY is allowed to see what my body is (or even might) look like, other than my lover.

Yes, there will be cute girl-butts. In poses that will give you very pleasant dreams.

Yeah I know a heavy guy who says he'd never go to a gym. Yet, there are heavy people who do go there. Girls and guys. One is about 400 pounds. It didn't bother me when I was 40 pounds heavier. Well, it did but not enough to stop me from going.

Yeah, I think it varies a lot from person to person.

E.g. I have no problem at all with a lover seeing me naked from any angle, but you wouldn't get me in a gym etc til I was a good 30 pounds lighter than I am now. And I know several women who are happy to display their fat at the gym etc or in shorts in summer, but wouldn't DREAM of letting a lover see them naked.

I  yoga!

Just do it! You won't be sorry! I'm primarily a lifter, but I try to fit in a studio class at least once a week and I practice a bit on my own if I can fit it in.

If you're not 100% comfortable with going to a class to start with, maybe pick up a couple of yoga DVDs or Google "free yoga routines" or something similar and practice at home to get comfortable. There are also a couple of yoga shows on Oxygen or Veria, if you get those channels.

The beauty of yoga is that you start from where you are. Plus, you're supposed to keep your eyes on your own practice anyway, but we all know that people don't do that!

I'll talk to the guy teaching the class. I like him a lot. He really knows his stuff too. I workout a lot now as it is but I don't work on flexibility.

The thing about yoga is, it doesn't matter how "good" you are at it. The advanced yoga practitioner gets the same payoff from contorting his body into a pretzel that you get from barely touching your toes as a beginner.

And yoga classes almost always have lots of hot chicks in them.

Yeah like she said hot girls in interesting poses. There is one very sexy girl there who teaches a class but it isn't yoga. What I really need to do it to get over to the Clemson gym. I bet it's wall to wall college girls. Big name Southern colleges have exceptional women.

Yoga rules. Makes you feel great. If you want a real ass kicking, try Bikram/"hot" yoga.

I'll tell you how bad it is here. Several years ago I did sign up to take a yoga class at the tech school. But it was canceled because only me and one lady signed up. A lot of people here believe you'll go to hell for doing yoga.

I'm trying to broaden my social horizons and meet new people so I thought I might take a yoga class too. Plus I have anxiety and I thought it might help with that.

I love yoga with my whole heart, I'd recommend it to anyone. Don't be afraid to get started, and don't expect to be able to do every move in every vinyasa right off the bat. Take it slow, and after a few weeks (months, years ;) ) you'll be amazed a your improved flexibility and health. Go for it! Who knows, you might see me in class ;).

Oh god, seriously. That'll wipe you across the floor like you wouldn't believe if you've never done it before.

I hate the heat, but I love me some Bikram yoga. :D

I'd be right behind you and I'd never miss a class if you were going!

I've never made it all the way through a class without either having to lie down and catch my breath while everyone else is still going, or leave the room for a while. It's kind of embarrassing to be outdone by a bunch of little yoga chicks, but it's worth it. When you are done, you feel high as a kite.

Did you just cal me a little yoga chick? hmph! ;)

I'd pass out. If the guy at the gym is working today I'll talk to him about his class. He should be there. The manager doesn't work on the weekend.

What is odd is that they only teach it one day a week. I guess you have to work out on your own. Once a week is not enough right?

Yeah once you learn the moves, you can do it on your own.

If it weren't for "the plough" position, I'd never sleep at night. Nothing removes tension in the neck better.
