Bundle up East Coast Campers!

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for the D.C. area. Snowfall accumulations from 12 and 22 inches along with 40-mph wind gusts were "expected to create whiteout conditions later this afternoon."

Other areas braving and expecting heavy snow included Baltimore, Maryland, where a blizzard warning has been declared; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New York; Richmond, Virginia; and regions from Tennessee and North Carolina to the southern New England states.
Chime in if you live in any of those states, people! Let us know that you're safe, alive, and still in possession of all your toes. Shout out if you're trapped under a snow bank and require a rescue dog!

(Yeah, I know the keg is kinda small. We kinda put the big ones to different use....)

Back to the, ahem, question. We're under twenty inches of snow here in central Virginia and it's still snowing. No use trying to shovel it, as it's coming down faster than the shovel would work. Three concerts I was to sing in over the next two days have been canceled--but not early enough to prevent a harrowing evening getting to a dress rehearsal for one and a sleepless night wondering if I was going to have to try to shovel out to get to a performance. (This storm might mark the demise of the Virginia Oratorio, which was banking on 100k in income from its Christmas concerts to stay afloat in economic bad times for arts organizations.) The electricy to my house is holding up, but it's down elsewhere across the town.

Biggest storm here since 1996.

I dig this shit. Everytime there's a blizzard, all movement essentially ceases. 99% of people don't set foot outside their doors. In years past, I've skiied down what is normally the busiest street in town with nary an automobile in sight. I've chased down herds of deer.

The quiet is wonderful and the brief reversion to an almost primeval state refreshing. It permits and encourages exploration on foot of places where one wouldn't normally go.

I've got my clothing for blizzard exploration down to a science. I wear a pair of foul weather bibs atop a pair of blue jeans. Above comes a layer comprised of a tee shirt, a chamois shirt, a goose-down parka and the piece-de-resistance, my Henri-Lloyd foul weather jacket. A pair of ski gloves go on my hands. My footgear consists of a well-broken-in set of waterproof hiking boots and my headwear is a baseball hat topped by the hood of my Henri-Lloyd top.

Dressed in this fashion, I am warm, 100% waterproof and ready to set off for miles and miles of cross-country exploration. It's a wonderful way to spend a day like this.

Days like today do give me a hoot. On The Main Line outside Philadelphia, I used to laugh at all the bozos who had spent $50,000 on Land Rovers ( complete with— god help us all— kangaroo bars ). Those types FINALLY have a day to make 'em believe the expense is justified. Today, all the yahoos are out with their 4x4s, half of 'em for the sole reason that they have a chance to play with their toys.

It is hard slogging through snow this deep. After a steady climb uphill, I was panting like a dog and sweating like a pig. Once the height was scaled, it was more or less flat but still hard going. Four miles and three hours later, it's time to take a load off my feet and enjoy the warm, dry comfort of home.

I'll get some skiing in later this week.

Why isn't New Jersey on that list, but two states (NY and PA) more inland are on it?

I'm fine by the way. It just started snowing here an hour ago. We are expecting 6 to 12 inches tonight. I can't wait to shovel it :D

Southeast Virgina and still it is rain, although the rain is beginning to freeze. It has rained so much though, that the problem will be ice. Still hoping for some snow, of which we have not had much for years.

"I may need to dress warmer, while waiting for Santa"

We just got 5 cm last night but it was really pleasant to go out and shovel the walks.

*nod*
Yeah, here in Va Beach it's been nothing but rain today. Not very heavy yet, but fairly constant in my neighborhood. I'm worried mostly about freezing on Sunday night, when I have to go to work next.

We have about 18 inches of the pretty white stuff...it's beautiful! :D And we are nice and cosy....hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps...fireplace... been reading ...so we are fine.

21 inches and counting in central Virginia. (The average snowfall for a year here is 17 inches.) I spent two and a half hours shoveling on the driveway today and only got fifteen feet forward from the garage doors. The main problem was in finding someplace to put the shoveled snow, with the secondary problem being that it's still snowing and infilling.

No a big deal at the family ranch in the Rockies west of Denver, but quite a big deal here in the "sunny south."

Still waiting for it to do something significant here in NYC... at least I don't have to shovel the stuff! :)

I'm here in TN and even though we're not supposed to get much snow, and we haven't gotten anything, everyone's freaking out and buying up all the bread and milk. They're salting the roads, and everyone thinks its gonna be the end of the world b/c of whats happening everywhere else, even though the weather man said we would only get rain!

(Of course I say this and then I'm gonna wake up tomorrow with an inch of ice on the road).

There's another storm coming up the coast? Tennessee is long ago for the storm that's only now exiting Virginia.

The Latest (Whoa!):

A slow-moving storm that blanketed swaths of the mid-Atlantic with nearly 2 feet of snow reached southern New England on Sunday in a weekend assault along the East Coast...Blizzard warnings were in effect for parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts with gusts up to 60 mph. As much as 16 inches of snow was expected to cover parts of southern New England.

On the cusp of the winter solstice, the storm dropped 16 inches of snow on Reagan National Airport outside Washington on Saturday — the most ever recorded there for a single December day — and gave southern New Jersey its highest single-storm snowfall totals in nearly four years. Some of the deepest was recorded in the Philadelphia suburb of Medford, N.J., at 24 inches. Around New York City, the brunt of the storm hit Long Island, with whiteout conditions. Nearly 25 inches were recorded in Upton by Sunday. Nearly 11 inches of snow fell on New York City by Sunday morning, and the storm could be the worst the city has seen since about 26 inches fell in Central Park in February 2006, National Weather Service meteorologist Patrick Maloit said.

I think this picture says it all. Even Santa can't deal:

Are you snowbound New Englanders ready for rescue yet? I found a bigger keg that wasn't in use and I've outfitted VM with it. He's ready to go!

By the way, the weather here in CA is in the 70's. *Sigh* :( No White Solstice for us....

No, but there's a 50% chance of a wet one.

The final count was 20.5". That puts it among the biggest snowstorms of all-time.

Are you still here? Get a move on! We've got New Englanders buried beneath the ice and in need of that brandy!

You give the Bear brandy and expect him to go somewhere?

He's sitting in his easy chair sipping as we speak. :D

It's actually been a nice day here since I finished shoveling. The sun came out, and it got above freezing for a few minutes.

another forgotten north eastern state
