Watching The Battle of The Bulge on the History Channel right now.

Great stuff. Henry Fonda, Dana Williams, Robert Shaw as the German tank commander (actually Joachim Piper), Telly savalas as the lunatic tank sergeant, Charles Bronson as the battle-hardened combat vet.

The tanks are all 1960's vintage, not WWII; they use lots of fake looking models; and the scenery looks more like southern California than Belgium. They didn't stick to the actual history of the battle, but hey, that's Hollywood 60's war movies, what are you gonna do?

The best thing: no Brits to fuck things up. Just underdog Americans turning the tide and killing tons of Germans. Gotta love it. Like I said, Hollywood at it's best.

My fave scene: Robert Shaw's men singing Germany Uber Alles, or whatever it was. Stirring.

I give it a 7/10 on PC's war movie scale.

I've got three I can watch. Green Berets, Kelly's Heroes, or the Dirty Dozen. I did the Navy thing yesterday. We watched Mister Roberts and Ensign Pulver.

I generally don't do broadcast television unless it's CSPAN or CSPAN2.

All great 1960's war movies.

Dirty Dozen: Classic. Absolutely classic. Lee Marvin's best movie. Sort of the grandaddy of the commando misson genre. 8.5/10.

Green Beret's: Classic in that it's a super-patriotic film, and really the only propaganda movie made to promote the Viet-Nam war. How could we lose with the Duke striding tall through the elephant grass? I'm mean hell, even the theme song was sung by an actual Green Beret. 6/10.

Kelly's Heros: Not quite a classic, but memorable, mainly for it's hippy psychadelic soundtrack (you can tell this one was made in the late sixties just by listening to it) and the long hairstyles on all the actors. Donald Sutherland even plays a hippie tank commander: "Like Wow, man, that's cool". Yeah right, we're in 1944, I believe it. Classic for comedy value and just because it has Clint Eastwood still playing the man with no name in WWII Germany. 5.5/10.

Mister Roberts and Ensign Pulver Are both great movies and rate as classics but automatically get 3's because they are navy flicks. Sorry.

I can just see that lunatic tank sargeant blastin a couple germans to hell screaming, "Who loves ya baby!"

unless of course he's playing a german guy, in which case disreguard last post.

I still can't believe ABC played Saving Private Ryan uncut and totally unedited last night.

The first "fuck" I heard sent my head twisting. Pretty cool, although I'm sure telephones in TV stations all over the midwest and south were ringing off the hook.

Oh BTW, Private Ryan gets a 9.5/10 for realism.

Loved the Dirty Dozen but I have not seen it in a good while.

No, cable here so can't see Battle of the Buldge although I would like to.

Sometime last semester NBC showed Saving Private Ryan uncut and I think without commercials as well. This was like April or March I think I am not sure.

It was pretty wild to see totally nude people running around in Schindlers List too! The word "Fuck" came up in that one too.

Y'know, I can usually tell which vets have seen action based on what movies they watch. Most of the combat vets I know won't ever make it all the way through Saving Private Ryan. And when they watch it, it's usually in total silence.

I know too many combat vets. :(

What? Come on.. How can you only give Kelly's Heros a 5.5/10?

Clint Eastwood, Telly Salvalas, Donalnd Sutherland, Don Rickles and Carrol O'Conner as the totally cluless General.. Yeah, no reality to it but it's a comedy fer chrissake!

Knock it off with the negative waves man! It's a mother beautiful tank.

1. It's the second time (at least) that they've done it. Sometimes the FCC is cool about things (slipping SPR into educational category) or ABC just eats the fine.

2. In the last battle the US has about 8 guys manning the bridge. Through the montages about twenty US guys get killed.

hehe...negative waves, that's it!

Yeah, I gotta stick with the 5.5. It wasn't much of a comedy either.

You're getting a little too anal there spin. I mean it's still a movie.

You've gotta hand it to Speilberg...SPR was miles ahead of any previous war movie in the realism department. I went to see it with a WWII combat veteran. He was shot through the knee at a paticularly nasty little place called the Huertgen forest. He still hates the fuck out of Germans.

He said Speilberg got it right. That's good enough for me.

That's you call it 'The battle of the Bulge'
There it's the "battle of the Ardennes" or "Von Rushstedd offensive".
You still can find Shermans and Panthers rusting in the countryside.
A good one.

All Quiet on the Western Front
Upon a Midnight Clear
The Thin Red Line
Paths of Glory
Johnny Got His Gun
Stalingrad

(The opening sequence in Saving Private Ryan is a masterpiece of violence and chaos. The rest of the film never did much for me. Muffin is right about the film though, alot of scarred veterans can not make it through that initial section.)

The Longest Day is another great war flick that takes soem pretty huge liberties with historical accuracy.

I personally love A Bridge Too Far because it's fairly accurate and loyal to the book, which is a great one, and the story of that battle is absolutely riveting.

It also shows the co-operation between the Allies and their different contributions to winning the war, which is something a lot of war movies don't show.

He also invented the filter that every other war movie for years to come is going to use *cough* Black Hawk Down *cough*.

I think it's good, I just see wayyyyy to many people who put that movie up on a pedestal of being the bastion of all movies, thinking it was by the book, this is exactly what happened.

I think you mean Field Marshal Gerd von Runstedt.

It's ok, your name is unpronounceable too. :)

I think most people realize that the storyline of SPR is just that- a fictionalized account very loosley related to a couple of other incedents. It's really just a vehicle to tell the larger story that Speilberg and Hanks wanted to tell- namely the sacrifices that were made during the war by "the greatest generation".

And in that, I think they succeeded handsomely.

I have a feeling this rant has something to do with my earlier chihuahua comment.
