YEAH!!! Bush did something really, really right!!!

I'm not worried... It was only a brain-fart on his part. He'll be back to normal tomorrow.

You're right. Tomorrow he'll back to his plans for starting WWIII out of those 3rd world countries. But fair is fair. For all the incredibly, unbelievably, insanely stupid shit that he does, I just had to give him kudos for this.

i'd give him kudos, but then i'd have to eat my words when it comes back two years from now that the entire infrastructure created by this bill has become totally corrupt and worthless, like everything else bush touches.

Um, he hired more cops. It sounds like it had something to do with kids, sure, but what the bill does is hire more marshals and assign a lot of new people to go after "internet sex crimes," which is to say, you and me, here on this porn site.
It will create a national sex offender registry, authorize grants to help local law enforcement agencies beef up registry systems, assign more FBI agents to Internet sex crimes and require DNA samples of sex offenders....''This bill will make a uniform sex offender registry in every state [and] add 500 new U.S. marshals..."
There is every likelihood that a "drifter" did the Adam Walsh crime-- see the last para. "Drifters" as a class have little logical connection to internet sex crimes, dude.

Kudos my ass. More cops, more porno police. Thanks for nothing.

Not if it's a military clock. And Bush is a digital, btw.

Checked the link. I don't feel safer.

Even if I was an American, I wouldn't feel safer. As a sufferer of mental illness I know how many people conflate that problem with pedophilia and sexual sadism.

Okay. Okay. Okay. I should be giving him kudos for doing something that sounded like a good idea.

I think its about time I move very north or very south. Who knows what kind of rediculous bullshit Bush is going to pull in what should be his last couple of years in office.

thank god.

I wasn't going to say anything.

I'm sorry for what happened to Adam Walsh... it's a horrible, horrible thing.

But I don't think this law is going to make kids safer--and it will probably actually hurt kids and families in the long run. There is an agenda behind this particular law, a huge one, and one that most people won't see. They'll simply swallow the sugar-coated crap and say "yum."

*sigh*

I don't see the connection between Adam Walsh, and internet predators. It was just a publicity move to name the law for Walsh, that's all.

Sort of puts Bush in a class of "predators" doesn't it?

I don't know about you but I haven't done anything "illegal" that anyone could prosecute me for. Ever, actually.

Actually, the way I read it, the majority of the bill has nothing to do with the Internet and more about creating a sex offender registry that works. Which I think is a good idea, if it can be done. I've heard too much of people unknowingly leaving their kids to be babysat by people who were previous sex offenders. However, I don't see how this would have helped in Adam Walsh's case either since he was snatched from a mall.

Yeah, when the second election for Bush came around I kept saying "I can't wait to vote him out of there." My friend kept reminding me that I didn't vote for him the first time.

I'm a porn author. Whether that's bad or not depends on the political winds. You're probably right, though. No one ever has anything to fear from the myriads of police, if they haven't done anything wrong. No one ever gets arrested or convicted wrongly. And policing the internet for porn is bound to prevent drifters from abducting and killing children.

Ah, shit. Sorry, magica. Don't mind me, I'm just feeling a sort of persecution mania as the police state is being built around me. All with doubtless laudable bipartisan support.

Why the hell do we need a federal law to get cops to share databases? Isn't that a good idea, anyway? Are there cops who refuse to tell other cops what they know?

And the article says the law will assign FBI agents to something. WTF? Isn't there an FBI director already? Suppose, two years from now, that number of FBI isn't required any more for that assignment. Do we need to pass another federal law, through both houses of Congress and all the rest of it, just to reassign FBI?

Maybe the article has some things skewed a bit.

No worries. "It's not paranoia if they're really out to get you." We all know the justice system is not perfect. It's just the best we've done so far. Many a science fiction book has been written on the basis of some "improvement" to the legal system that turned out to be a horror.

My gut feeling is that if Bush signed it, there will be some fatal flaw in the workability of it- and we will see our civil liberties infringed upon as well.

Just because Buih signed it. Call me irrational, but there it is...

My confusion comes from the fact that only Adam's head was found.....how the hell do they come to the conclusion this was a sex crime? Because it was a child that was abducted and not an adult?

Believe me I'm not poo-pooing the seriousness of child molestation and abuse, but this was a connection I simply cannot make. Smacks of a quickly grabbed chance to use a current situation to bring in some legislation that had been on the books for a while, just waiting for an opening.

Adam Walsh disappeared back in 1981. The basic facts can be found in many places but here is one concise bit - http://www.answers.com/topic/adam-walsh

I think he has become a touchstone for Americans on child abduction because his father turned this terrible thing into a crusade for himself to stop other abductions and I can't imagine anyone in the U.S. not having seen at least a couple episodes of America's Most Wanted. It has worked many, many times to catch criminals. In fact, several people have turned themselves in when they saw their story on the show because they knew it was only a matter of time.
