Yahoo/Hotmail e-mail attachments

Is there a trick to sending e-mail attachments betwen these two clients? I tried to send a story off to an editor (from Yahoo) as an .rtf, but it came out as junk on their end. I'm thinking as attaching it as something like .zzz. My thought being it won't try to print it out in the e-mail (formatting and all) if it doesn't recognize the file extention.

Any people familar with this care to impart some knowledge and advice?

Sounds like maybe it tried to render the RTF as HTML? I would zip the file first.
