(Yet Another Formatting Question)

I want to include some Arabic script verbatim in my story.

I tested this by previewing, but not publishing the story, (setting the language of the story to English). The Arabic (Unicode) text looked fine on the preview.

But I've always had some doubts about how close the story preview is to what the story looks like to actual readers.

Will Arabic script appear correctly when the story is published?

If it looks OK in preview, I'd guess it would be OK. PM me when it's published and I'll let you know!

There is a ‘default font’ for the story views but I don’t know what it is. At least for me, I can also change my story views to Verdana or Times (I assume Times New Roman.) These at least generally have display capabilities for Arabic characters. Registered accounts can pick one and it’ll be remembered.

That said, pulling up some examples, such as Wikipedia articles that mix English and Arabic, the Arabic characters are shown. I cannot vouch for its correctness though, not knowing Arabic. I’ve not downloaded any special fonts to my phone (Samsung running Android, using Chrome to view the English language Wikipedia article on the Arabic language.)

IOW, it’ll probably work… but it’s also possible some individuals might have issues. The Wikipedia article has a disclaimer/warning at the top.

The only thing that the preview doesn't do is page breaks. Although I have never used a foreign language in my stories, if it's Unicode, I don't see a problem. If it looks good in preview then it will look the same after it's published.

You might get a query as to what it says if that isn't explained in the story, from Laurel.

I had a story which I wanted to end with a musical note - again, not quite the norm. I PM'd Laurel in advance and found it would be no problem.

I've found that the preview and the published are not always precisely the same. If not having Arabic script is going to make a difference to your story, I would suggest you do the same.

Good luck.

@RubenR: Amharic eh? :cool:

Ok thanks all, that was generally the answer I hoped for.

Don't put it in your title or description line. That goes for any accented characters as well. I haven't checked to see if the new pages correctly handle these, but legacy pages fail to properly display them more often than not.

This wasn't typically the case within the body of the story, though. That seemed to handle unicode and special characters just fine, with only a few exceptions that displayed in preview, but failed in the final posting. ( The diamonds suit, for example )
