Had a potato omelet one Christmas I spent broke down in Figeuras, Spain (Dali's birthplace, it turns out.)

Tomorrow it's Turkey, brined and cooked breast side down, sage-and-rye bread stuffing with chestnuts, wild rice, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, the old stalwart green bean caserale, roles, pie and cake and a cheese board with fruit and nuts and port afterwards.

Anyone else?

You UK guys still do those amazing puddings?

We do a big dinner on Christmas Eve and then a nice breakfast tomorrow.

Tonight's dinner will be ham, homemade applesauce, fresh broccoli, rolls, deviled eggs, a huge veggie and pita tray with homemade hummus and other persian delights, fresh fruit, brownies, homemade toffee and fudge, pie, lots of white wine and the world's best egg nog that I drove a total of 6 hours to procure.

The egg nog makes the day, by the way. When I returned with it to Milwaukee and gifted my friends and family with a quart each, there was much hooping and hollering. And when my friend Mike tasted it for the first time, he swallowed, smiled and said, "If angels gave milk from their busts, it would taste like this." Yes, sir. That's some good NOG!

Spent one Christmas on Cat Island in the Bahama's with the only electric power supplied from a generator at the small Catholic Church.

Shared a Christmas play, live on stage, performed by former black slaves who had an entirely different view of Christianity. Aside from the Priest, the entire population was black, the food was fish and coconut based with a side of roasted wild pig and conch.

One of the most memorable occasions of my life as we had sailed a 36 foot boat through a storm and with a blown out Jib, limped into port to be wildly welcomed by people waiting on the beach as we rowed the dingy into shore.

Eat your heart out Ernest Hemingway!

Sounds delicious, Zoot.

This evening we're off to my husband's dad's place. It will be a small gathering (his wife passed away a few years ago) and very low stress. We're having Kansas City BBQ, and we're bringing special rolls and cheeses to make incredible sandwiches. It's become tradition to have BBQ and slush punch (non-alcoholic now because of our children). Then we'll book it back home (90 miles) for our Night Before Christmas rites.

Santa comes tonight - and our family will do the traditional Thanksgiving-ish meal tomorrow. Small, just the four of us, wallowing with full tummies, hubby and I reading our new books while we watch the kids tear up the house with their new toys. Fun.

Later next week we'll travel to my parent's house. It's a bigger gathering, many more stresses (we'll try to avoid the topics of politics, or taxes, or the economy, or the war, or - well, you get the picture!) but my niece (brother's daughter) will be there and we haven't seen her in more than a year. So that's good.

I haven't the faintest idea what the meal plans are, however. :cathappy:

Merry Christmas, everyone!

I'm making a ham today. Probably will glaze it with melted cranberry jelly, and have green beans with potatoes and bacon, rolls, and spinach pie. Banana pudding for dessert - my bf's favorite.

Tomorrow we go to his parents, reluctantly. His mom is a terrible cook. Everyone pray I don't end up with food poisoning from undercooked turkey.

You guys really get all that? Doesn't anyone just sit at home alone with a tin of room temp chef-boy-ardee? Oreo's for desert?

Not since I was an undergrad.

Tonight, it's off to my parents' house for our traditional goodies of baked ham, sausage balls, chex mix, rice krispy treats, and fudge.

Tomorrow, we have brunch at my grandmothers with eggs, bacon, biscuits, and sausage balls.

My mum is bringing a christmas pudding tommorrow and we'll have it with white sauce for afters. There will also be Christmas cake (homemade) and mince pies (also homemade) as my hubby doesn't like pudding...and you can always make room for a little slice of Christmas cake :)

For the meal we're having Turkey (not my favourite but mum insisted) stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, roast potatoes, carrot and swede mash, broccolli and gravy..oh and some little sausages wrapped in bacon :)

Then boxing day we're off to the in-laws for a buffet...no idea what that will consist of!

Had my Christmas dinner at my brother's last night (as I'll be flying over an ocean on Dec. 25).

Tamales, frijoles, arroz y flan.

We've been munching on the fruitcake I made two days ago since it came out of the oven - we're about ready to break the second out of the freezer.

Today everything is Italian; my father's side of the family always focused more on Christmas Eve. There was always fish, usually bacala (fried codfish made from reconstituted dried fish), and frites - twists of fried bread dough - and pasta. We're having that tonight, although this God-forsaken wilderness does not know the meaning of dried codfish (or figs, for that matter, which I hardly thought exotic) and so we are making it from frozen fillets instead. I think I may also make some pizzelles. Oh, and I accidentally ordered a positively decedant selection of Italian cheeses from an online gourmet store (they were meant to go to my father but came to me), so there's a cheeseboard of epic proportions to nibble from all day. The mountain gorgonzola would lay a lesser horse in its grave with a smile on its face.

Tomorrow there's just the two of us, so we're having roast duckling with orange/honey glaze, mashed potatoes and parsnips, and a fresh salad of julienned green and yellow squash with lemon zest and tarragon. There's a walnut tart for dessert. Anyone who happens to be wandering a God-forsaken figless wasteland is welcome to drop by.

  • Roast Turkey w/ fresh cranberry sauce, chestnut stuffing, sage stuffing, + "secret" stuffing (a recipe that will die with my mum)
  • Kasha pie
  • Latkes
  • Roast potatoes
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Roast parsnips
  • Fried spinach with garlic
  • Grilled Aubergine
  • Christmas Pud w/Brandy Butter (Henessey)
  • Crackers

No idea. Whatever my folks are cooking.

Here's hoping it's roast beef and mashed potatoes. All other things are incidental.
:D

(Howdy nice horsey person, btw.)

Shang, I can send you Bacalao (Mexican spelling) via Priority mail, it travels easily :)
And amybe I can tuck myself in that box too? Your feast sounds soooo wonderful!

I'm cooking a pot roast- the traditional way, with Laurie's Seasoning- today, to be serverd tomorrow. And a medley of roasted root veggies, as my stepdaughter and I are both Rootabaga and parsnip fans. I think I'd better add a couple of lighter vegetables as well- garlicky green beans, seared with oil and vinegar, and something else like that. I'm making one last dash to the store... Didn't really plan anything this year!

Howdy there, majestic fluffy one! Here's hoping that you get that roast beef and mashed potatoes. Hmm ... that's starting to sound awfully good, actually. Might need to make that soon.

All the best for the holidays -

Next year! Let's make a date for it. :D There's always room at the table for a weasel-chow drag queen.

Bacalao is sex food.

Smoked turkey. Smoked ham. Dressing, cranberry sauce, mashed taters, candied yams and desserts that will cause your arteries to harden with just a glance at them :)

I like the carb-laden side dishes better than dessert. In my four Thanksgiving dinners this year , and all the ensuing leftovers, I only ate one piece of pie :)

Never had Mom's chocolate pie. you can't eat just one piece. Or if you can, you have better will power than the little piggy in me :)
