I, like most people, assumed (as you still do) that the actual surgical mask that my actual surgeon brother wears during actual surgery is worn because it is a meaningful control measure to protect the patient and/or a meaningful PPE measure to protect the surgeon…

So everyone thinks masks work and docs wear them to protect patients and themselves.

…So, I read up on it to determine the best sort of mask. What I read was study after study saying it does nothing as PPE. And is only useful as control for infected patients in that it catches flegm from sneezes and coughs.

Once a virus is airborne, there is no protection possible in an environment where humans have to breathe. That is the very thing that real epidemiologists (not ones that play the role on TV) fear about airborne pathogens. They are virulently contagious because all the hand washing and lysol spraying of surfaces in the world has no effect. Breathing is exposure.

So the Wuhan lab was engaged in "gain of function" research, a fancy way of saying they were 'weaponizing' viruses. Research funded by the US taxpayer and approved by Fauci. Which clearly explains why no zoonotic host has been found, there isn't any.

The Wuhan Flu did come from that lab because that is the only place it could have come from and it WAS engineered. Those two facts are pretty clear now. The last issue is whether it was purposely released or not. On that point I still contend that it wasn't, just another manifestation of sloppy Chinese procedures.

Well, probably a fair reason is that these days it’s not considered proper to purposely expose people to potentially deadly diseases in studies.

But there’s a bunch of systematic reviews, ecological studies and laboratory studies that document the efficacy of masks.

As the evidence mounts it is becoming apparent that the folks at NIH might as well have been working hand in hand with the CCP to cover up the origins of the Wuhan Flu. (And the term "Wuhan Flu" is taking on more and more relevance as well.)

I've seen a couple of polls recently that indicate that the US population is in favor of taking action against China over the release/escape of the disease from the lab. OK, I can understand the sentiment but to me the focus is misguided. After all, that research was done with the full consent(?) and funding of the US taxpayer. It seems to me that the focus of our anger should be directed more towards DC than towards China. While China did take advantage of a situation, NIH was the enabler.

Which brings me to the incredible naivete' of scientists, most particularly those practicing in the Life Science field. Their intense focus on 'science for science's' sake along with the notion that all of their 'comrades' are in the field for the betterment of man kind lead them to make some extraordinarily poor decisions. Funding dangerous research undertaken by an adversary (if not an out and out enemy) is not the act of individuals that have taken into consideration all of the possible consequences. The fact that that research was taking place in a sub-standard facility makes those decisions even more damning.

Then there is the question of whether this type of research should be undertaken to begin with. Gene editing has progressed to the point where it is more of a technical undertaking as opposed to a scientific task. Once the targeted gene is identified the editing may take place in a matter of hours. Now we have a new pathogen that might potentially be loosed on the world and as recent experience has show the creation and deployment of a vaccine will take well over a year. Millions and millions infected with millions dead. The point of most of this research is to determine what the new pathogen might do and to consider vaccines to counter said pathogen. Obviously there is something wrong with the current research model. Perhaps consideration of what the vaccine would look like, and prepare said vaccine, BEFORE the new pathogen is created should be the model. I don't look forward to any such changes in the near future.
