Writing when aroused

You Should be Aroused

Expressive writing is an art. I doubt anyone would suggest to a painter that he or she should not approach the canvas when feeling vulnerable to a particular emotion.
Erotica is meant to convey sexual tension and excitement. I can't write erotica if I'm not in the mood to do so. I experience the story as I write it- if it doesn't excite ME, it's worthless.
Editing the story is a different matter. I know I've written something good when it takes me days to edit it because I get hot and bothered every time I read it.

writing when aroused

I always write erotica aroused. It helps that I type insanely fast, but my writing definitely needs a read over, and up to this point what I've been giving folks on literotica is the raw output of my crotch with some help from my brain and fingers. This is why I'm looking for an editor. :) People seem to enjoy what I've written, and I'm very receptive to their input and feedback, so I'd like to think that what I'm doing is not all selfish. It's definitely an erotic experience for me, though.

Hi Guys

It certainly seems to be the consensus that we need to be aroused to write the first draft, and then cool down to edit. If its really steamy, that may take several edits!

I certainly get extremely steamy writing things up for my blog (lettersaroundmidnight.blogspot.com) and if it isn't steamy enough; well, as people are saying there is no point writing it. My partner certainly finds my writing steamy so as I am writing chiefly for us well that's good enough for me.

I think you push the envelope too far. There's a difference in what folks "do" and what they "need." I don't see a consensus on how erotica "needs" to be written or even that there "needs" to be a consensus on how it "needs" to be written.

I don't think it's true to say "if it's not steamy enough there's no sense in writing it."

I mean, if you're writing to please yourself and your partner and you're doing it, then I'd say you've succeeded. If it's not steamy enough for the two of you, then it may be true that there was no sense in your having written it. But it's not true for everyone. It depends on what one writes, and why.

Writing when Aroused

Points taken sr17 and favoritesgoddess,

My post was clumsily written in the nature of a response to those who had contributed and ignored the potentially wider audience who maybe had read but not contributed. My only defense was that it was written quickly over lunch and in the nature of a footnote to the thread as a whole.

It would have been more accurate to write; that of the people who responded, and who expressed a preference; the consensus, amongst them, was that if they felt a desire to write erotica (which was no indication that any erotica needed to be written at all), that the preference expressed, was to be aroused when writing and then cool down during the editing process.

On reflection, I also agree with favoritesgoddess, there is always a purpose to writing "it" whether it is steamy enough or not. As we are all writers, writing is what we do. If it is not steamy enough for us it maybe more than hot enough for someone else. If it does not communicate our required level of steaminess then it can be steamed up to do so. Either way it has served its purpose by being written. Steamy or not.

I hope that clears it all up.

At least as a whole writers who love erotica are reading and writing about it, sharing ideas and being frank. A forum for thinking writers.
