People are always bitching there aren't enough of these. And I'm in a silly mood.

So let's talk about writing.

I like it. I especially like describing the scene and the emotions involved.

And I especially like the word 'especially'. In case you haven't noticed.

Carry on. :p

I got stuck on Friday trying to write. Took eight hours over fifty words.
They were the right fifty words eventually.
Better luck tomorrow I hope.

I'm dissipated in every direction. A dozen works in progress, and nothing finished.

Love of variety? Meandering muse? Or avoident behavior?

you're just too brilliant to be confined, your mind must be free

He's got it right, Shang.

i love to write (or at least used to), but don't seem to have the vocabulary for it. Maybe it would be more accurate to say the vocabulary is there but, because of lack of use, the words won't flow together the way they should when i sit down to write.

Coming here was an attempt to push some of my limits, and also to post in a place where I can get feedback, but my closest family wasn't necessarily forced to read something with the word "cock" in it just because they were checking out my blog.

It's been wonderful. I have learned some stuff. I can't and won't write about everything. Coming here just helped me define where those lines were drawn naturally and I lost the impulse to push further.

Maybe those will expand, maybe they won't. Right now it's nice to know that I have a well-lit circle of where I'm comfortable, where I want to play and what is fun, and people to have fun with without being run out of town on a rail for being outrageous. Here I'm tame.

Wheeee!

Personally, I am trying to NOT use my vocabulary in writing. In my 'formal' writing I have such a .... hmm, annoying use of 25 cent words. It is nice to break out of it and just use really common words for a bit.

I'm not going for flow exactly right now so much as a raw feel. Its like once you do flowery inteligensia enough you just wanna kick back and think beer in a bottle is fancy. So thats what I'm doing in writing, and it's hard.

I just keep thinking, if it's hard it must be doing something. NOthing good is easy.

That sounds so delicious that I hope you won't mind me disregarding the original spelling and intent. ;)

I'm new :) and sorta delurking... been posting here and there.

I've been off work for three weeks and only have about 20kw for another genre (a travelogue), and I sorta feel like I've wasted my time. I did a short bit of erotica last night, but it's kinda hard to get it going.

I have a really cool novella I'd like to finish - I'm in the last few pages of it, I can sense it, but I'm too close to it, so I've gone back to writing shorts. I have a hard time closing longer stories. Anyone have any hints for that? I don't think I'm going to close all the loose ends, but enough, maybe to deal with a sequel...?

Welcome to the AH, it's nice here and sometimes people make out.

Advice for closing longer stories? I try to make a list of my loose ends as I go along. Some people have story outlines, but I'm not that well-organized, so I have a bunch of post-it notes. The best advice I've had from anyone is to just buckle down and write the story.

Writing eh?

I really fucking hate writing.

I mean writing as opposed to typing. With, you know, a pen.

I can't do it propely. It looks like shit, and if I do it for more than ten minutes, the whole arm starts to ache. I'm a keyboard kid, me.

I'll echo Scarlett's welcome to the AH, Lady T! :rose:

Writing. Oh, how I want to just sit and write; the voices in my head natter on incessantly when I'm covered up at work or in a meeting, etc.

Hi Rob! Thanks for getting the AH back on topic! :D

Writing to me is freedom. It's helped to shape who I am and sometimes I even surprise myself.

Why is it that I always get inspired to write when I don't have any time, and when I have time, inspiration fails me?

No way- that's not YOU it's ME :)
what a coincidence that we share the same failings, huh?
About three weeks ago, I though- "Well, I'll bang out a funny little story for "Talk Like A Pirate Day", that will take a couple days- it's not finished because I got interested in the characters, one of whom is young Jack Sparrow- before he becomes a captain.
Then, I was goofing around on another forum, and posted some pics of captain Jack. A friend posted a pic of Johnny as himself- and it gave me the idea for a completely different story. This one sprang entire from my brain, is short- under 2,000 words- and almost finished. And my silly little pirate story has become bigger once more.

I know what you mean Alex- and then, later, you let some of those words sneak back in...
If you want a challenge, try writing a story in which there are NO direct quotes, but the characters talk a lot!
I just can't figure out how to end that one... But what a great exercise!

Shanglan, What I've read of your work- leads me to think it will all be worth it when you DO finish something!

At least you're writing. I've been working on Ch. 2 of a story I'd posted months ago, and after writing the first draft weeks ago, I haven't been able to finish it. I know how I want to tell my story, and I had all weekend and I just couldn't find the right words, but now, they're all there. Right when I have to go to bed so I can make it to work tomorrow. Frustrating.

Writing is my outlet and sadly, I don't do it as much as I should because I can never seem to find just the right words and the story, poem, prose, etc. piece never turns out as good as it was reading in my head which makes me give up quite a bit. I don't know, sometimes I love it and sometimes I hate it.
