Writing question: Patching holes

I guess for me the character plots work with multiple characters. I sit down and write out each charcter's features and emotions. How they would react to each situation. Then, adding in the plot of the story, I entwine the characters together. The conflicts, the love and how each might react. Then I know each character. So when the action happens, I know how each character would react.
I let the story carry itself. The plot may change as the writing progresses. But not the characters. I've set them a certain personality. That is how they react. They tell me how. And that flows with the plot.
Your characters are your creations. They are what you make them. They will react as any live being you know because of the personality you've given them. Just give them personality and let them be themselves. Don't try to fit them into a scene. If they're suppose to be there, they will.

Perhaps you are overplotting the story.

A multi- plot, multi-character story is like a picture puzzle. The more pieces you add to the puzzle, the harder it is to get to the finished picture.

Make an outline of your story. Keep it simple!

Stay true to your plotline!

Give your story a begnning; a middle; and a end!

When introducing new characters and subplots; make sure they fit into your original plot outline. Too many times I find myself adding people or situations which make no sense in light of where I want the story to go!

If you do hit a roadblock then ask yourself if this character or situation moves the story along or just clutters it up more.

Too much plot; too many superficial fringe characters have ruined many a good story.

Just my $.02 worth.
