snowchildren roasting marshmallows over an open fire
overshadowed by the abominable snowman
down the street a dinosaur chases mr and mrs caveman
to gift them a large wrapped gift
the boys are coming home from college
delayed by opening day of skiing
fresh dump of snow provided an "epic" day
how did this low key christmas season
result in hours of wrapping

there is a fresh green wreath at my door
multicolor lights wrap Joe's twisted filbert
Claudia's tree skirt
adorns a bare bifurcated branch
festooned with a hand strung garland
and glittery folded stars

hold me close love
stroke my hair
smooth my troubled brow
lead me back to find
the joy in this season
that is marred
by change and loss

maybe the snowchildren
will roast me a marshmallow
the taste of childhood
on my tongue
a portal to simple joy

despite the sun and mild temps
something to do with antibiotics

and a list of 'must-dos' that didn't get done
a hill too steep to contemplate climbing

to root around in political dross
like a pig on a truffle hunt
where all rewards are stale

Typical Friday night
drinking to a fresh heartache
while revisiting the one I can't let go
sinking into the collective social sadness
that keeps dingy dives like this afloat

The rapidly aging whisky drinker at the bar
requests a nostalgic love gone wrong
a young buck with a cheap bottle of beer
asks for AC/DC from an acoustic guitar
to the too raucaus laughter
of his merry band of bros

But the sounds that keep coming
from his corner are all the soundtrack of us
the alchohol keeps pouring
more people onto the floor
in some approximation of dancing
and i just ignore the occasional rowdiness
coming from the bar
in the relative safety of my wallflower booth

Through the haze and motion
I catch his barely there smile
our eyes lock in a swell of melody
that makes the past present
and i've lost track
of whose turn it is
in the bittersweet game we play

I consider sending him a drink
debate if I'll stay
to the end of the set
or the end of the night

Another sip slow burns
through my blood stream
as he fingers familiar chords
and I sway closer
and closer
to choosing the bonfire

glistening white snow on cold moonlit nights
the squeak of bitter cold snow under my boots
walking arm in arm, his pipe smoke swirling into my hair

remembering
that time when I was orphaned at christmas
sleeping in a makeshift bed
taken in by kindly church people

remembering
buying imported wrapping paper by the sheet
the heft of the stock, surprising in my hands
the old world designs enlived with silver and gold

remembering
marzipan pigs and chocolate cherry cordials
train sets and barbie dolls dressed in new clothes
when we still believed in a Santa navigating our chimney

remembering
the warmth of a special meal
family gathered 'round, dotting grandparents
of simple gifts, well chosen or well made

these are my holidy memories

Her kid got covid at a basketball tournament
where the indoor mask rules were not enforced
and the observation of fire code was optional

He told her to get ivermectin
in lieu of a vaccine
to protect their pre-teens
she shudders at the thought
and will take him back to court
who knew my work would come to this?
Advising on parenting agreements
in the age of a global pandemic

Waiting for results
listening to her toddler cough
second guessing her every choice
she tests herself
worrying over her own symptoms
and what should she do now?
she'll be isolating until christmas
her husband alone and cold til then

It is just one bummer
after another
my advice so limited

perhaps the best I can do
is reassure
guilt does not help heal
no more woulda coulda shoulda

just do your best now
get enough sleep
eat healthy food
drink water
be kind to yourself

a playlist, Burn the Photos
full of brutally bitter songs
about broken love
so I hit play and started the car
let myself slide indulgently into that emotion
because I'm not, but it would be easy
such a convenient outlet
far less messy than the tangled web
of feelings that I file into the unsatisfactory category
of missing you
miles and miles disappear under my wheels
driving hours through the dark
borrowing all the angst and anger
I can sing at the top of my lungs
taking the back roads to delay getting home
and the lingering silence of disconnection

That Smile

Speaks volumes as the black light glow
brightens your titanium white teeth
so that the flesh of your lips turns black
as you raise the neon blue of the gin and tonic
to your grin. My eyes narrow in early
assessment of the lines that define
a well worn amusement there and my heart
smiles an answer to the shape of your mouth.

I slow down my forward lean and fight
the attraction drawing me closer, as if I
were iron and you were the cynosure
at the centre of all I found magnetic.
That smile of promise to favour my lips
with a taste of you, to let me lap up the flavours
and make you a part of my cells. A small
bit of you comes through, mingling and blending
with my own molecules' infinite recycling
until you are as entwined as my own DNA

What makes those lips so full behind your facial hair?
I want to bruise them with my teeth as I try
to gorge on your kisses without using you up
the very first time we tentatively brush close
tantalizing teases of feathery whispers of: "Let me,
let me darling, let me, please." Until you yield
and I have my way with your tongue.

A sunny summer day

Fish and chips, cuppa chowder

But it was the kayakers
That made a lasting impression
Pulling to the dock
Just to pick up lunch
Their own fish and chips
A meal al fresco
On their own power

This seminal moment changed his life
Having sworn that day
To someday be a kayaker too

Now, decades later
He's built a fleet of kayaks
Paddled miles of coastline
From Sitka to California
But today
On a cold and clear December day
He paddled to Ivars
Got take out fish and chips

That Skin

I so long to touch you where your jaw
turns to neck, the skin looks so white
and smooth and my fingers strive to linger
on their jounrney to your shoulder
as we move closer for the slow dance
a spiral drawn by our feet as the music
swirls notes through the air while words
get lost inside the beating of my heart
Then the adventure continues as I feel gravity
weight my hand and it slips past your tshirt
and onto the muscled bulk of your arm
