New month. New challenge.

This challenge is going to run for three weeks and this month we have one prompt!

You can involve the prompt itself in your piece and make your links to the prompt as obvious or as subtle as you like or use it simply as inspiration for something else. You can use part of the prompt, just one aspect of the phrase, or use it in its entirety.

The word limit for this month’s challenge is 1,500 words and your submission can take whatever form you desire – poetry or prose, complete story or a vignette. Erotic or not, serious or light hearted, it’s whatever you want it to be!!

It’s your writing, your challenge. You write whatever you’re inspired to write! Be it one piece or several!

Post only your submissions in this thread, constructive comments and reviews are to be posted in the appropriately named – Writing Challenge Review Thread :D

The deadline for this month’s challenge is Monday 24th June 2013, to allow readers time to get through everything before the next challenge starts!

Previous challenges and reviews can be found here.

Happy writing!

We were so young. Of course, we didn't look at it like that. We were tasting those first few years of freedom, those years where adult means nothing and teen seems so distant. We had time to kill, no money and very little responsibility.

He and I were in love. Together for almost a year. Inseparable since the first time we had sex, so he was a one night stand that's lasted. It was a bad one night stand, he was given another chance because of honesty. Like I could leave his side.

They called him an honorary camp counselor. The weekend counselor. He was with us when the kids were gone and we got to be ourselves, and not just the happy, hiking version that the parents saw and the kids loved. He was with us for the drunken singing, the naughty lullabies, the naked jumping jacks. Yeah. That was me. Of course I started that. Truth or Dare. That just turned into Dare.

Earned me my first kiss from a girl, too. She was gorgeous. A sexuality that wouldn't quit. I aspired in my young adulthood to be like her. Maybe I've got it right. Almost. Maybe. She was blonde. The counselors made fun of us for the rest of the summer. It was hilarious. But secretly thrilling.

The boys had gone off to Las Vegas for their holiday week. The rest of us trooped off to Durango. On the way, we had to stop. To see the sand dunes.
In the middle of Colorado. In July.

I wore sandals. These little brown things that I hated, but that worked because I was always on the move with my girls. We wanted to head up to the top and slide down.

We hadn't counted on the sand being fucking insanely hot. My sandals were no match for the burning sands. I tripped, scraping up my knees. But the worst were the burns across my toes. Little pinstripes of pain. But we laughed at ourselves. At our folly. And dashed down the side of the dune to the little creek that ran past the dunes, burying our burning feet into the ice cold glacier run off.

We made it to Durango, sleeping ten to one hotel room. He and I sneaking off for some adult time in the bathroom. We were so young.

One of the best summers of my life, when I burned my feet on the dunes.
I still have the scars.

If you seek purification, look no further than the desert. White hot sand and frigid nights will cull your pain and fear. In the blinding noon and blinded twilight you will see beyond horizons and through oases. Know that you are naught but a grain of sand, sifting through time and space. Know that while you are miniscule, you are not insignificant. Know that in the simplicity the dunes provide you may find profundity.

If you seek to find yourself, get lost in the desert. There is no better teacher.
