Has anyone ever suggested that there should be some sort of ‘heads up’ here at Literotica to let newbie writers know that their stuff will end up all over the internet on other porn sites alongside pictures etc? So they can at least think twice about what the do and don't post?

Do newbie writers who post here really believe that their work will not end up all over the web? How would knowledge that it might be stolen influence what you post? I post anonymously, so it's not like I have my identity invested in this. Besides, the crude porn site that stole mine dropped my name along with the second page. I don't think people go there for the stories.

Seconded. Nothing on the internet is sacred. Hell... I steal images from sites all the time. It's a world of sharing... and caring.

Not really so much with the caring. I just felt like rhyming just now. Cow.

Apparently so. We have a "they stole my story and I'm taking them to court" thread pop up about every two weeks here.

This is a ludicrous thread. I doubt much more needs to be said, but I am sure more will.

Posting anything anywhere on the internet is an open invitation for it to be stolen and reused elsewhere.

Literotica's owners will pursue those thieves that they can influence but if the site responsible is registered in China or Eastern Europe we just have to accept that it is impossible to get a remedy.

We don’t all arrive here knowing everything. I have other stories published on the internet and they are not copied all over. I was naïve about how porn works on the internet, so shoot me! But there are people posting fantasy, romance and other non erotica here, they are posting long pieces of work that they are putting a lot of time and effort into. If these people are unaware of how other porn sites might use their work don’t they deserve some sort of advice when the arrive?

Erotica is more likely to be pirated than non-erotic works.

The quality of the work seems to be irrelevant to many of the thieves as long as they THINK it is erotic.

They frequently steal only the first page of longer stories. Why? I don't know except perhaps that's how their autobot works.

It's not just porn sites that work this way. You're naive if you think you can control anything you post on the web.

Because they only want a body of words for the search engines to catch. As far as bot-driven sites are concerned, random phrases will serve their purposes as well as coherent content. Like those gibberish spam emails you get everyday.

You might try PM-ing Laurel (not email) and bring this point up with her. It might be a good thing to add to the submission form, and she's a very caring person. But she has no legal responsibility to do so, so don't get your panties in a wad if she says no, okay?

So I have discovered. Quality and even content are irrelevant (they will spice it up with key words). This along with being naïve about how porn works is confusing to a newbie. You would think that only complete and really hot, stroke stories would be of interest but it doesn’t work like that. They’ll take anything just to have some text. Well I think that sucks!!

Literotica is a victim of its own success.

Anything posted here is likely to be read by tens of thousands of people. Some of the more popular stories are read by hundreds of thousands.

That success makes Literotica a great place to showcase your writing but also a treasure house for those wanting to steal your words.

It sucks - but that's the way of the internet. The more successful a site is, the more it will be raided.

Yeah, it isn't even a compliment.

On the other hand, people here have discovered deliberate pirating-- where one person has taken stories they loved, and pretended they'd written them. That'll make you see red-- someone else getting kudos for your work.

(by the way, Anyone know what happened with that myspace thief? I can't remember her handle.)

I think I all ready did!

Thanks for the suggestion though, I will feel better if I do something.

All the stories and comments were taken down, but the page was still there last time I saw it (I can't remember the handle either).

Yeah, I'm worried enough about my social security number being processed in those countries. Having my stories stolen by them is, like, not even on the radar.

A friend of mine who keeps track of people who plagiarize others had her page bookmarked so I asked her for it. Oddly, she has a blog post about plagiarism there now and the one story that is posted, she gave credit to the author:

If that link doesn't work for her blog, here's the link to the main page:

Yeah complaining that she never plagiarised anything. And her friends agree that they know she wrote those beautiful stories, and the original authors are just fooling themselves... :D

Here you go:

Sturgeon General's Warning
Posting stories on Literotica may lead to plagarisim, corruption of story content, unauthorized presentations, annoyance, irritation, high blood pressure, vitriolic rants and potential loss of income.

:D

One would think that should be the case, but much of what shows up on the Net is a meaningless excerpt of an interior part of a series story.
True. And when it is a story written for commercial gain, wheeow, that is definitely actionable. Especially when it's plagiarized by a site that profits off of it. Double plus.

But still, excerpts that don't cite the original author... those suck no matter what.

God! That myspace page is even more hideous than it was back then!
