I do think that scissoring has become more popular since it's become such a porn staple, primarily, as you alluded, as it appeals to the male gaze, allowing both women's bodies to be fully displayed (Just as in mainstream movies, women are most commonly on top in sex scenes.)

This is a really good point! A lot of the ol "people get promoted to the level of their incompetence" phenomenon, were bosses see someone who excels at their area of expertise and assumes that would make them excellent management material.
