Something must be catching. I'm off the forum for a weekend (well, mostly), and when I get back, I run face-first into a bunch of arguments.

Maybe it's not my place to post this. I am new, after all. I've only been on here for about 5 months. If it's not, and that's the general idea, I'll gladly back off.

So here's my dilemma. I'm in an area of the country where I don't have the resources that many of you have. My life is a secret from all but the few very intimate friends that I have. I turned to the BDSM Lit forum as a source of information and encouragement; a place that felt a little like home, as stupid as that sounds. It's all I have, for the moment at least.

The one thing I've always noticed about this forum was that there has never been that "Our way is right, yours is wrong" attitude so prevalent in many others. Now, I know that everyone is human, and I don't mean to put anyone on a pedestal, but people that I look up to as being open-minded, wise, and kind are bickering and acting exactly like all the other forums.

Come on, guys. We can do better than this. Right?

Eh, maybe it's just my luck, but as soon as I got back I ran into three threads in a row that had turned into bickering matches. I don't want to post which threads because I don't want to add to the problem. Which I could be doing by posting this thread in the first place. Wasn't my intention, by the way. This just seems to be happening a lot more recently. I know it could just be me. If so, ignore me, I'll quit whining eventually.

i believe she's probably speaking of me and ADR's little battle of words/miscommunication in the 'why is obesity so prevalent in the BDSM communtiy' thread as one of them. *shrugs* i could be wrong...

but anyway, on any forum you are going to have strong disagreements, thats just the way it is when you get a bunch of people together in one place, whether it be face to face, or on an online forum such as this, we are all human and we are not always going to agree on things. sometimes we read things the wrong way, and interpret them the wrong way and take offense. i'm not saying this is what happened where you're talking about, i'm not positive what threads you are referring to, but whichever it is, it happens from time to time...

that's the bad thing about online, you can't hear the poster's tone of voice or sometimes you can read more into what is actually being said. i wouldn't worry about it too much and just move onto other threads till said 'argument' is over with.....as humans we feel strongly about our views, beliefs, etc..and that's who things flare up. this place is an awesome place to hang out even though there are occasional 'arguments' now and then. i personally have not seen, other than the one i was involved in today, any arguments in the threads. maybe you are referring to the 'how much do i love my Master thread' where all of those arguments are LONG over with, which is another thing i forget to do sometimes, is look at the date things were posted. *shrugs* anyway, i would say, just move on and don't let the occasional fights scare you away.....it's a part of life....and it will settle down.....

Not sure what you are talking about specifically as I am not awake as yet, but it is life and if the forum has to start censoring itself to become sugary sweet, full of agreement only and 'I agree', I for one will be out of here. Lit is high on free speech and when compared to most on the net, this is one of the few which seems to keep itself fairly civil and able to agree to disagree without resorting to bad language (except for the occassional person who doesn't post here as a rule) and personal insults. The reason we have some of the best and most informative postings based on real experiences I believe comes from the fact people are able to speak, discuss and debate topics without having to feel the need to speak only when they have something positive or perfect to say. If there are grumbles at the moment, they will pass as they always do...as you say, we are only human so do not fit the perfection label, but I also argue the point we are like all the other forums in terms of disagreement...as you know, even in the best of homes, harmony does not always prevail.

Seriously, though, I don't expect everyone to be perfect or to get along all the time, but in terms of respect and understanding that everyone has their own way, I thought something was beginning to slip. I never said anything about censorship.

It must just be me. It's something I thought I noticed. I was hesitant to post in the first place, since I rarely feel I have much to add, being so new to everything, but I thought it couldn't hurt to get more experienced members' opinions on the subject. Oh well. I didn't start the thread to pick or make anyone feel that I'm singling them out, so please don't.

I don't think anyone is offended by you saying anything, but it is as we said, just a part of life. As to not mentioning censorship, true, you didn't mention it by name but censorship is about wanting people to restrict saying what they feel just as much as it is about restricting our access to visual materials others may not approve of, or being told we can no longer practice any form of D/s or BDSM because mainstream society and/or the government doesn't deem it healthy or necessary....it all comes down to restricting freedom of speech or expression.
