Would you submit a story with very little sex?

I mentioned in another post yesterday about my friend and I challenging each other to write a story about the same picture. Mine ended up being around 8500 words while she wrote 5 medium length paragraphs. We told basically the same story, but I am very wordy!

Anyway since I was talking about the story I decided to read it and I like it! I thought about submitting it here but there really isn't much sex in it and the sex is only a hand job at the end.

Would it get bashed here? I think it's a sweet story but wondering if the lack of sex, since this is an erotic story website, would get a bunch of nasty comments and down votes.

Yes, and I have. Some readers complained that the implicit sex was making them work too hard.

What are the story dynamics? Some tales require constant fucking, some almost none, some merely implications. Some focus on the consequences rather than the fucking. My highest-rated story is a historical romance with exactly one brief explicit scene, a BJ. My next highest-rated is fuck-o-rama. Depict however much sex as necessary for your story.

I have. Just recently. Sci-Fi fans really don't care about sex all that much. Try my Walking the Dog. I have also written stories in the past without any sex and they have done fairly well.

I'm with you on this test adventure, too, Monkey. I have now written two with zero sex as well and will be submitting one soon. We will see what happens with it. The first one did surprisingly okay. (Not great but okay.)

If you like it, go for it. I no longer care how a story scores. No matter how good it seems to one, another will call it trash. Look at Shades of Gray. It was horrible to me. Others loved it. Go figure.

So, there are readers who will read and appreciate nonerotic stories here even though this is an erotica site, and the site supports them. It has a category for nonerotic while it doesn't have categories--or very limited categories--for some sex activity preferences.

You won't find the account of mine that is all nonerotic stories.

No, I wouldn't put a story with a sex scene in it in the nonerotic. I'd put one there with some sexual tension and anticipation of carry through later or off stage.

That's what non-Erotic is for. I have a mystery there that's done well. Any passion is off-screen. One reader was disappointed by the lack of explicit sex...

I have whole chapters in longer erotic stories without sex. They rate well. I have one chapter in noncon which is almost all sex, and it's the lowest rated thing I've ever written (I think the problem is that it's not non-con, at least as people here think of it).

If you tell an interesting story, you don't have to sex everything up. In fact, long breaks between sex scenes, that are still interesting, give the reader time to charge up for the next orgasm.

Don't confuse "Erotic" With "Explicit." Aside from the non-erotic category, a story can be highly erotic without being explicit; in some cases more erotic than if the author included very explicit sex.

Will it get bashed? Depends on how the story is written, but who cares? Your story is going to get a low vote by the eleventh voter no matter what. A quality story will eventually recover and a poorly written story won't; What matters is how you feel abut the story.

I have posted several tales that are light on explicit sex; and while, for the first few days, they tend to take a bit of a one-bombing from Mr Manny Any-Mouse, over time they generally drift upward on the scoreboard.

I have also posted a non-erotic story or two, and they have also done surprisingly well – which, given that this site is called Literotica, is a bit of a surprise. But I’ll take it.

The category does matter. Romance will tolerate little to no sex if it is romantic. Non-erotic isn't even supposed to be but I've gotten bashed for there being no sex by people who weren't paying attention to what category they were reading. On the other hand, I have one non-erotic that has gotten consistently high scores, it must speak to people on some level. I've written essays here that people have given very positive feedback on. I'd say if the story is good, it will find readers.

Most of my stories here are light in explicit sex. I look for "erotic" more in the situation than in Tab A, Slot B. I've been pleasantly surprised at how readers receive them.

In particular, my two EH and one Fantasy piece got some very generous responses without much explicit action at all.

Maybe. Probably not. But who cares anyway? ANYTHING you write may illicit complaints, after all.

And what does it matter if some people don't like the story? The only tangible penalty for poor scores is that fewer people may read it. But if you never publish at all then the number of people who will read it remains zero, already the smallest audience you can possibly (not) get.

I have several in the non-erotic category, including one contest winner and one that's been on the top list forever (ranked from first to twenty-second, where it is now). They're some of my highest scoring submissions. And I've never had anyone say the stories needed sex.

Go for it. My highest-rated story here is in the Non-Erotic category. It also has the highest views-to-votes ratio of anything I've posted, so it seems the non-erotic audience tends to offer up more votes than the people who come looking for a quick wank.

Sure. I've done it. My story "Guilt" has no sex (and was a very early effort). Other stories (and I mostly write romance) have little sex, or take a while to get there.

It depends on the story and the reader, and while I think there are certain expectations of sex in some categories, there's no rule that says it has to be there. Erotic, as someone else said, doesn't necessarily mean "explicit sex."
