I'd rather believe that religion has made the world better, but I fear that it has made the world worse.

Its nothing more than a control mechanism.. and Ill stop there.. Im on a no politics diet while Im here :p

I openly admit I voted it has made the world worse. Now I have to pick which church service I want to attend tomorrow.....

I can't vote since it is not a black or white question. People who are zealots make the world worse. Religion came about to explain away things that we as humans had no understanding of in the primitive days and has been used to subjugate and control the populations of the world since forever. But that was done by people. Not dogma. I believe in putting the blame where it belongs.

There are thousands of religions Clowns, all with their benefits to some who follow them...I don't think you can have a blanket yes or no...and I don't know enough about all of them to really have an informed opinion rather than a gut hatred of what I see the followers of the main religions advocating in the name of their chosen invisible omnipotent being...

...personally I'm an atheist to the point of anti-theism and pagan in my leanings without all of those silly gods and goddesses, but am able to see where some of the religious beliefs of the past can and have informed some of the moral codes we live by today and can offer some comfort to some people. I hate to see the manipulation of the vulnerable that goes on in the name of religion and I think the imposition of doctrine has had terrible consequences throughout history and over the entire world...I've personally seen it do terrible damage to individuals within my care throughout my career.

Bizarrely, I live in a cathedral city in the UK and never stop marvelling at the building that was first started in 1092. I am in awe of the drive that enabled that building to be constructed in that time with the tools they had then and the craftsmanship involved but am able to recognise that it was mostly about power and money. Build an inspirational building on a hill top in a very flat county where it can be seen for 20 or 30 miles away...now that will keep the peasantry in check and show everyone how rich and powerful the church and it's associated patrons are...

When the revolution occurred in Romania a good few years ago now, and the terrible truth of what occurred in the orphanages and mental institutions over there ,friends of mine were some of the first to go over to try and help in some way. They ended up going with a religious organisation because for some reason, they always find a way to get there first...the first things unloaded off the lorries they had taken out there weren't food or medical supplies...they were bibles, because when you're starving to death or wracked by disease and neglect-the first thing you need is indoctrination...

Have a look and see who manages to get out there first when there is a disaster anywhere...religious organisations and journalists...I often wonder if it's out of some altruistic motivations or because harvesting souls is so much easier when people are most desperate?

Personally, I believe that most religion is all about power and money and preying on the vulnerable in some form or another to continue that power...

Ironically a rather long answer from someone who said they couldn't fully answer...

In the name of...worse.

The actual application of...better.

Good answer. Religion has been around for so long it's track record has serious highs and lows. Today it is a mixed bag. Like Misshotndeep said, it's people that choose how they use it and as history has shown, there are good and evil people.

Religion as an institution.. I would give the same answer as I would if we were discussing any organization who abuses power
But I'm not sure that's the question.
At the very ground level, as a system of faith, I believe that religion has the potential to provide people with a sense of hope and fellowship and I don't know that it's fair to pass judgement globally on something that can be so significant within a smaller group of people.
I voted "better" - because let's face it - we all secretly cry at the end of Sister Act.

I loved reading these posts. Both are so eloquent and thought provoking for me. Thank you for that. :)

I heard this discussion on the radio yesterday. It was very interesting. I appreciate everyone's opinion on it. I also appreciate no one turning it into a bitch fest.

I'd like to believe it makes the world better, one person at a time, based on the golden rule. I want to believe that most people are decent, caring souls. So based on the word 'believe' in your poll, I voted better.

BUT...lately it's a hard sell. I'm not seeing it, unfortunately. The bad news far outweighs the good. What people are doing in the name of religion...and I'm not just talking about the Islamic extremists. Christians murdering doctors and bombing clinics. Hateful "Baptists" interrupting funerals. The list goes on.
