Would society be able to keep assisted suicide separate from "required" euthanasia?

This is something I have pondered many a time. I would appreciate some input from the great minds here to help fuel my own mental debates.

(For the record, I am for a person's right to choose if s/he wishes to continue living. And I am for assisting someone if they have become to debilitated--to prevent people from doing it sooner out of fear of losing their chance. I am not against euthanasia in certain circumstances and my family knows well many of the circumstances in which they would not be allowed to let me continue here-as per my wishes.)

Just what exactly do you mean by "required"?

I believe also that a person should have the right to take their own life or have it taken if they can't. But to answer your question I need to know what exactly you mean.

Youth in Asia?

In Germany, for example, during the height of Nazi power, there was great pressure to die if one had a debilitating illness or was not "perfect". (It was played up in the media and people in "special homes" becan dying at an alarming rate with many families typically being notified when the person's ashes were delivered to them)

This is what I am referring to.

I don't want Granny to consent to suicide or assisted suicide because she is a burden to everyone around her and nobody wants to change her diapers.

It sure worked in Nazi Germany, and in Logan's Run! Of course we now have a new breed of "NAZI's" under different masks and causes.
NAZI's are;
Pro-choice
Pro-environment
Pro-animal rights
Anti-democracy
Anti-gun

Same people...different year! :D

Unfortunately, there will always be those out there that will take advantage of someone in a hopeless situation for their own gain (be it a gain or just the chance to not have the perceived burden anymore).

This brings up an interesting situation too. What about some cheating doctor who decides to convince someone not to do it so they can continue to bill their services to the insurance company. Or some assisted living home that tries to prevent a patient from doing such for the same financial gain reason.

It may very well open up a whole new set of 'scams'.

Was Dr. Jack in it for no other reason than to help those in need or did he have some fascination with becoming famous?

I think "Society" can keep things separate, but individuals...?

I don't know, really. I'm sure that there ar a lot of selfish peopl in this world, and on a case-by-case basis thre would likely be pressure put on "granny" by her family to "end it all" so the insurance could be collected.

I doubt that staff at "the home" would be involved, because it wouldn't be profitable. I don't think there would be any political pressure either -- athough, there is the cost to Social Security to provide assisted living so their might be a political movement to "encourage" SS recipients to "ease the burden on society." I can't really see that happening in the immediate future though.
