The World's Longest Sermon
LONDON (Reuters) - A British vicar on Friday began a two-day-long unscripted sermon in an attempt to set a world preaching record.
Chris Sterry, the Anglican vicar of Whalley in Lancashire, northern England, will talk on the Old Testament until late Saturday -- with only 15 minute breaks every eight hours.
Sterry, 47, hopes to break the record for unscripted speech -- which stands at just over 27 hours -- and to set a record for preaching.
This will include strict regulations restricting nonsense, repetition and pauses longer than 10 seconds.
``This will be a proper sermon and I hope that those who come to listen to it will get something out of it,'' Sterry said on his parish Web site.
He said he hoped the preaching marathon would raise $3,000 for a local charity, the Whalley Parish Church Ministry Fund.
And parishioners in Whalley will be relieved to know that there will be no sermon this Sunday.
