Caution...kind of gross medical descriptive

taking antibiotics for an abscessed tooth, and by day nine it was obvious that plain old penicillin wasn't working.

Side of face was so swollen that I wanted to slice it open to ease the pressure. Emerg DR put me on a super strong antibiotic, and 6 hours later..bingo!

Drainage, relief, swelling decreasing.

Now, ahead lies either a root canal, or extraction.

decisions, decisions...

Anyone else have this experience?

Been there and done that, it is not fun. I don't want to do it again. I feel for you!

Yup, unfortunately. Latest visit for root canal was very recent, as a matter of fact.

Go the root canal route if they can save the tooth. Unless it is a wisdom tooth that you don't need anyway.

OK.....

#1 Extraction is cheaper
#2 Keeping your tooth is important!....however,
#3 Root Canal can be waaayyyyy expensive
#4 If you get a root canal, the tooth will get brittle and break, so you're gonna need a crown (also expensive)
#5 Root Canal is not painful, as long as the infection is gone

My opinion....if you can afford it, do the root canal and crown...it'll be worth it in the long run!

Wost experience in my life WAS a root canal. The cleaning and whatever the hell they did inside the tooth hurt like hell.

The problem is that the bone is gone, and it is highly likely that the infection will re-occur. I am reluctant to go through a root canal, and then still need an extraction later. I can get a bridge done, and my work dental insurance will pick up 65% of it. The teeth in that area are crowded and misaligned anyway, so the bridge could make things slightly straighter looking.

Crowns are not always necessary after a root canal. Unless there is something else wrong with the tooth, I'd have the root canal and not worry about the crown until your dentist says you need one. It takes awhile for the tooth to heal from the root canal, I wouldn't want to do a crown right after one.

I agree....you definitely dont want to do a crown immediately. But eventually the tooth will break if you dont. It will become brittle and maybe discolor. The tooth actually loses it's blood supply and "dies". If you have some bone loss, from periodontal disease or something, you may be right about not getting a crown. An extraction, then bridge might actually be a better answer, especially if you have cosmetic issues. JMO

I've had root canals and extractions, which wasn't bad, but the last time I went the damn bastard cut the inside of my mouth right next to where he was drilling, so I had sore teeth and mouth for about two weeks... and to think I pay money the S.O.B.

Yesterday. I was told I have Gingivitis, &, now, I'm afraid of losing my teeth. Nothing that hurt me, but, it was kinda scary having the doctor say, "If you don't do something, you may need to get dentures." I was like, "At 23?" But, luckily, if I crack down on it, now, I will be able to save my teeth.

Don't worry Nasty!!

I think your poor little teeth will survive!!! Dentists always try to scare the hell out of you!!!

But do floss!!! lol

Don't worry Nasty!!

I would do whatever the dentist told me to do because I am 29 and have dentures. worst dentist visits was getting all my teeth pulled. My advice drink alot of milk and stay away from the speed.:)

I'm not worried,(too badly,)because, we got it early. But, what pisses me off was not listening to their warnings until now.

nasty, re-read my first post.

Gingivitis is what caused the bone loss which led to the exposed root which lead to the infection.

Floss, visit regularly, and I also now use a dental rinse, instead of mouthwash.

Don't put it off, as you will pay in the end, like I am.

I wasn't trying to insinuate that nasty should just go on as she is, that's why I said floss. Brushing and flossing properly will prevent tooth loss!!!

Sorry if I came across as saying something else!
