World Cup Thread

Indulge me. :p

I thought I'd kick off ("kick off", geddit!?) with a joke that made me snicker...

GOOD NEWS!!!

Wayne Rooney can play in the World Cup so long as he gets a cortisone injection.

Bad news is David Beckham is threatening to pull out unless he gets a new car as well.

And if any of you septics whinge and complain, and/or degrade football in any way, or even ask who anybody is that might be discussed in this thread, I'll smack ya! You hear me??? And not in a fun way. :catroar:

Come on England!!!!

(That's a chant, btw, not a request. )

Isn't David Beckham the fool who married Posh Spice?

:p :D

(Exit stage left, giggling all the way)

OK, ripped off from Yahoo in blatant violation of copyright!

Computer says Czechs will win World Cup

Brazil will not repeat as World Cup champion, according to a simulation of the tournament.

Electronic Arts, using the simulation engine from its 2006 FIFA World Cup video game, has the Czechs defeating Brazil 2-1 in the final.

Czech striker Milan Baros won the Golden Shoe as the tournament's top scorer with six goals, while teammate and playmaker Pavel Nedved took the Golden Ball as the top player.

Ronaldo and Tomas Rosicky exchanged goals in the first half, according to the simulated final, before Nedved unlocked the Brazilian defense in the 77th minute to set up Baros for the winner.

In other action, England lost to Germany in the round of 16, with the host side eventually losing 2-1 to the Czechs in the semifinals.

Brazil downed rival Argentina in the other semifinal in the only penalty-kick shootout of the simulated tournament. Tied 2-2 after overtime, substitute Robinho knocked in the winning kick after Juan Riquelme shot wide on Argentina's final penalty.

Argentina beat Germany 3-1 in the third-place game.

The simulation had its share of upsets, with Italy and Portugal knocked out in the group stages.

The surprise team was Costa Rica, which made it to the quarter-finals before losing to Argentina.

The United States fared well in simulated play, with wins over Italy (3-2) and Ghana (2-0) and a tie against the Czechs (2-2) in Group E, before losing 3-2 to Brazil in the round of 16.

With that number of ex Leeds players in the squad we can't fail.

And Brazil are gonna find it difficult to get through the group stage. (More ex-Leeds players in Oz)

Pity the Arse don't have any English players to put forward :p

Yay footbal thread!

I hope Rooney isn't used willy nilly -I've got a seasons worth of footie to get out of him *L* But I am glad he's doing well -I want to see him play at the world cup :)

R Richard -the czechs, eh? Well, I'll believe it when I see it *LOL*

Can't wait for kick off :nana:

I'll be thrilled if we beat the Italians or the Czechs...I think we should beat Ghana...most Copa Mundial fans think U.S. and they still picture the team that could barely qualify, not the one that made it to the quarters last time around and had it's chances against the Germans...

I'm not going to get into a pointless arguement over why England (or Portugal) will win the World Cup. Maybe.

The team I was rooting for didn't even qualify :( Denmark, why must you suck so painfully? Stupid Turkey.

Still will watch though, looking forward to seeing how the matchups go and seeing if there's an underdog that can upset the big boys. That and seeing who ends up putting one to Brazil (the Yankees of the football world as I see it).

It's 'cos Schmeichel doesn't play any more LC -He was magnificent in his day *completely biased Manchester united fans view*

I will enjoy the world cup, I'll concentrate on the England Matches but I'm bound to catch other matches too, it's going to be fun. I, like Luc will be looking for an underdog to support, I do like an underdog. However if it comes down to Englandv my underdog in the final - I'll be going all patriotic *grins* I don't like under dogs THAT much *LOL*

This matches my predictions for the US.

Really? Their group looks awfully soft to me. Some upset potential, but I can't see Brazil not advancing.

James -I do believe Gauche is biased -he's Yorkshire -Leeds is a yorkshire footie team so he reckons any ex leeds players will lead their team to world cup domination :D

Oh and I think he's baiting Lou, too. :D

This is more like it! :D

Sensible, unbiased discussion about the best tournament in the world. Well, almost sensible, and not at all unbiased.

As a famous early morning Radio 1 DJ says: LEEDS!

Shame they're ex-Leeds players though, eh? Might've won the play-off if more were still around... :p

As for this:
Pity the Arse don't have any English players to put forward :p

If you mean "put forward" as in to actually play in the squad, I have two words for you: Sol Campbell. And let's not forget Ashley Cole.

If you mean "put forward" as in play in a forward position... Sol is a kick-ass defender, but he knows how to position himself in the other team's box when needs be, and he scores his share of crucial goals (even if they sometimes get disallowed for reasons known only to the ref. )

;)

Lou
It is sooo good to see you wasting your time here again :D
Thank you for your kind words elsewhere, much appreciated.

As for the footy - I expect England to freeze on the big occassion, I expect Portugal to play like the a band of egotists, which means everyone wants to be an individual hero, hang the team ethics. I confidently predict Ronaldo will be sent off, and possibly Deco (for diving) and that Figo will cry again after being substituted.

Shame about Arsenal v's Barca - I thought of you. :rose:

Hehe, yeah wasting time is right. I should be getting my latest doggy training course finished off right now, not to mention the 57,000 letters I have to write and stuff, but pissing about on here and talking footy seems more fun at the moment. ;)

Pleasure, mate.

Hmmm, as much as I am rooting for us, and desperately want us to do well, I must admit that I am bracing myself for the usual disappointment that we go through every four years (two, if you count the Euro's as well). BUT, we do have a very strong team (with or without Rooney), and spirits are high. We'll see.

"Shame about Arsenal v's Barca" doesn't even begin to describe the blackness that came over us, but it all turned out well, cos I think that one match was the event that finally made Henry's mind up to stay with us. As I said to someone else: we lost the battle, but we won the war, and the ultimate prize: Thierry Henry. :D

Thank you, though. :rose:

I'll be watching witha group of brazilians, so I'll be routing for them, but mostly because the women watching wear very tight very small clothes, and when they jump up and down and get excited and start kissing everyone around... I want to be part of the collateral damage :D

This "World Cup" you speak of? Is it some sort of trophy the winning team of the "World Series" is given? Isn't it a bit early to speak of this? Baseball runs until October.

<diving into my bunker at a undisclosed location> :D

No, no, no, - don't be silly. The World Cup takes place again in 2007 in France, and the first match is to be played at St.Denis on 7th September 2007 between France and the winners of the current Americas tournament.

*yawwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn*

;) (ya gotta catch me, to smack me, and I'm safely thousands of miles away in Az away from the mania.) The world cup doesn't exist over here, watched on the news here last night, and the USA team was training somewhere (can't remember), and there were no posters advertising, no tickets for sale, no receptions, nothing. Its like they don't exist. I don't think they get the whole thing over here about just HOW BIG the football world cup has become, and how many countries take part. Maybe one day.

Our hopes are resting heavily on Wayne Rooney's metarsals right now.

I've got seven teams listed as possible semi finalists. Germany, England (Rooney or not), Spain, Brazil, Chezh Rep, Korea and USA. The last two are wildcards, but fram what I've seen of them, not at all impossible.
