First, happy new year to everybody!

Next, let me come to the business.

News reports of various agencies show that former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn, who was under house arrest in Japan where he was awaiting trial on financial misconduct charges, has flown to Beirut. The Brazilian-born executive faces charges of deferring part of his salary until after his retirement and concealing this from shareholders as well as syphoning off millions in Nissan cash for his own purposes.

Please note the word "Brazilian-born", why is it not "Brazil-born"? Does that mean he was born as a Brazilian (he got the nationality of Brazil automatically) or he was born in Brazil but as a citizen of Lebanon?

Thank you for your help.

The modified way of phrasing it is common. Somebody is Brazilian-born vice Brazil-born, Chinese-born vice China-born or British-born vice Britain-born. Goshn was born in Brazil into a family from Lebanon. His family moved back to Lebanon when he was still a child. I would guess that he got Brazilian citizenship from being born there and Lebanese citizenship through his Lebanese descent.
