someone sent me this...

yes, she has an annoying voice. but she also has the interesting facts & figures in a 5 minute presentation. a lot of the points rang true for me, and now I want to know if any of you fuckers can relate to it too.

thoughts?

I can, tho I don't test for any of it, but what people report makes me wonder.

Because I'm trained in recognizing mental disorders the autistic people I've known I diagnosed with pervasive developmental delays, they were immature in distinct ways, but usually matured eventually.

What makes you think youre autistic? Youre not among the strangest posters at LIT.

It's a spectrum though. Like ADHD is on the autism spectrum, and someone with ADHD might appear completely normal until you realize what a screwy mess their life is because of that undiagnosed condition.

indeed.

like the vid said, women on the autistic spectrum are often just better at disguising.

I was non-verbal until 4. rarely spoke at school. didn't play. disguise improves with age, I find.

You don't know ADHD. I usta screen kids for the health department, and adhd kids aren't autistic, theyre fuggin destructive tornadoes.

Very true. I had two little girls in my classroom diagnosed. It was like pulling teeth because " little girls can be shy and lagging behind socially, verbally etc."

ADHD is like dealing with Tasmanian Devils. ADHD is impossible to disguise because the kids are so out of control and destructive. Its not the fidget disorder, the ADHD kid dismantles your classroom. Schools never diagnose it correctly. If the child is atop his teachers desk, sitting atop her monitor, he's an ADHD prospect.

As a child, I was diagnosed as having "sensory overload."

I work better in the computer industry that seems full of aspies.

adhd in kids is different to adhd in adults.

adhd in boys is different to adhd in girls.

young women with adhd is the largest growing demographic of adhd diagnoses -- it was thought of as something that only affected little boys for such a long time that a huge number of young girls fell through the cracks.

we disagree. We've struggled for a sense of the disorder forever, and every road leads to Rome, one expert concluded. Based in my training and experiences with ADHD, I have my own ideas about the disorder. Hyperactive means what it says, it aint immaturity, its animation off the charts, kids who race around the school campus and get on the school roof and climb out bus windows and sit atop the teachers monitor when they aren't emptying shelves and throwing objects from the teachers desk. They go to prison eventually. I thin k I can make a case that looters are ADHD.

I appreciate the world disagrees with me, but my model is right.

I've never met a female ADHD. I don't buy the female model for it.

So true. Young girls (and many adults) used to slip through the cracks because it often manifests in them mainly as inattentivenness and distraction.

But a lot less nowadays, at least in Australia. School teachers are really good here - and they're quite informed and trained about mental health issues in kids, too.
On the other hand, they don't overdiagnose ADHD either, the way (I heard) they do it in the States.

With me, it was my liver that was out of order. I had the symptoms, beyond all mistake, the chief among them being "a general disinclination to work of any kind."
What I suffer in that way no tongue can tell. From my earliest infancy I have been a martyr to it. As a boy, the disease hardly ever left me for a day. They did not know, then, that it was my liver. Medical science was in a far less advanced state than now, and they used to put it down to laziness.”

ADHD is on the autism spectrum? That's interesting. I'd heard that the DSM-5 for the first time allows for a person to be diagnosed with both autism and ADHD, but I thought they were still different disorders. I'm talking American pysch manual, though. Maybe it's different elsewhere. The two diagnoses certainly overlap. The whole attention deficit piece, for instance. And kids with autism always seem to be teetering into hyperactivity. My son's body, in his resting state, trembles ever so slightly. And when he tips over, he's like a friggin' pinball machine.

And yeah, the girls are a whole other mix. I'm actually glad I had a son. The information available to me at the time wasn't really relevant to girls with autism.

I'm not diagnosed, myself. Then again, I've never sought a diagnosis either.

ADHD is pretty easy to recognize because of the hyperactivity. Although in my previous district teachers weren't allowed to say that someone was hyper as the district claims that hyperactivity is a medical term and teachers aren't doctors. We just called the kids squirrely. I have worked with a lot of males and some females. I found that more girls had ADD than ADHD. Boys are naturally squirrely especially when confined in a classroom and expected to follow specific tasks so it is the children that stick way way out from the rest that are more likely to be referred for help. What is hard to identify is ADD. Those kids that seem to daydream constantly, lose focus easily, forget what they are saying in the middle of their own sentence but can tell you what everyone else in the room is doing, are possible ADD candidates.

I wish American teachers were better trained to help with children with different issues. Children are placed in the classrooms and teachers are given little to no help with understanding the child's needs or how to help that child. This means everyone struggles, the child, the teacher and the other students.

Oh for fucks sakes, 10 years later are we still doing "romantically damaged dolf" threads? No one wants to hear about such nonsense from a pudgy middle aged woman. I guess that's why pictures are no longer attached.

Please tell us more about what you were like in kindergarten. It is riveting.
