In the mid-1990's it was "slouch socks" that were all the rage.

My first wife always wore them but had a curious pet peeve; she hated wrinkles in her socks. It was not uncommon for her to be at a restaurant, mutter something, undo her sneaker, take the wrinkle out of her sock, and put her sneaker back on. Or in the middle of the grocery store. Or during a hike. Wherever... she could not stand wrinkles in her socks.
