((if this isn't the right place for this post - I'm okay with it being moved to the appropriate place))

I've seen lots of local postings and internet sites for local writing critique groups. A lot of their descriptions include references to general fiction, but none mentioning or specifically calling out erotica.

I'm reluctant to join a general fiction local critique group simply because my "portfolio" doesn't include any general fiction AND I'm really interested in developing my style in the erotica genre. Joining a general fiction group that isn't into reading erotica wouldn't help me much. Plus I don't want to deal with some of their attitudes towards it.

Anyway, to my point. I want to start a group in my area. I've looked into sites like Meetup.com and I'm not interested in paying for something that my not get off the ground. I would be willing to manage a Yahoo Group or free message board as the group develops but I'm not interested in paying for something at this point.

I live in Ohio. Akron to be exact and I work in the Cleveland area so anyone on this board living within that radius is welcome to reply to this thread or hunt down my profile and IM/email me/PM me.

If Lit has something like this already brewing, please point me in that direction.

This isn't an advertisement for r/t sex or anything like that. I'm not trying to "cruise" for sex partners. I'm wanting to meet like minded writers to meet and talk in person out our craft, projects and accomplishments.

What you describe is exactly right here. Look at the Story Discussion Circle, read the sticky thread at the beginning of it. Lit is fantastic that way. Why do the people you do this with need to be local, geographically?

Is that where I need to bring my work?

There is a "sign-up" in that forum. First come first serve on critiques. I think there is room for a new posting right now if I'm not mistaken.

And what was posted by cantdog is right, that forum for story discussion is helpful. But I think something is lost, just a little bit, when you don't know the person writing the critique or don't really know the "place" their opinions are coming from.

I think there could be another level to some discussions when you can look someone in the eye and hear their ideas and thoughts. ::shrug::

Plus it could be a bit more social when it takes place in person.

Okay. I was so happy to find it. I read the stories of my interlocutors on the Circle forum, and that helped me to 'place' them. But i see your point. Face-to-face is always better if you can.

yes, if you can. But I have the same problem, here in L.A- finding people who take writing seriously, and are willing to take smut seriously.
I love playing here on AH, and it really does start my creativity flowing, but I would like to talk more about the business and craft of writing.
As far as knowing where someone is coming from, I often check out their output in the stories section, that tells me pretty quickly if I should have respect for someone's craft, and what their particular style issues might be, those sorts of things.

Meeting face to face is difficult for some of us because we are writers of erotica and that can be incompatible with our employment and/or local status.

I have belonged to a local creative writing class and admitted that I write erotica. For a while I was a pariah until I had demonstrated competence in other genres.

NaNoWriMo has local meets. Perhaps one of those might be suitable?

You've got a point there.
