From the Aug. 30th Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

Those stories ahead, but first time for COUNTDOWN “Top 3 Sound Bites” of this day.(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)............

MARLA HUNLEY, ATTACKED BY OTTER: I‘m squeamish about going back in the water.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Marla Hunley says she won‘t forget the terror the last time she went swimming in Crater (ph) Lake. She says a river otter attacked her that day and took chunks of skin from her body.

HUNLEY: She punched him in the head and that‘s when he finally got disoriented and let go.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Her sister punched the otter in the head?

HUNLEY: She punched him in the head.(END VIDEOTAPE)

Just looking at him is enough to fill me with dread (or is that the burrito I had for lunch?).
It's dread. ;)

I would think those little puppies could do some serious nibbling. And they eat like 25%-35% of their body weight each day; they can weigh as much as 25lbs. Death by river otter would be a sucky way to go.

"went swimming in Crater (ph) Lake. She says a river otter attacked her"

Well, you have your answer above. She went swmming in a LAKE and a RIVER otter attacked her. Obviously the attacker was a renegade with no regard at all for the rules. Blaming all river otters for the attack is clearly unjustified.

There are only two kinds of otters in the PNW. Sea Otters and River Otters.

This is the first time I've ever heard of anyone being attacked by either one but they do get rather large and have a nasty mouthful of teeth.

And yes, Crater Lake does have River Otters.

I think this is just an odd story.

Clearly a renegade band of river otters! Can't you people up in the PNW do something about antisocial critters who refuse to stay in their named place?

It's the Racoons!

Hey! Maybe the Otter is working the riverfront for the Psycho Killer Racoons?

Think about it! I bet they're in league. And I bet the otter is getting paid by the racoons to make sure everyone knows that the riverfront is their turf!
