Okay since my weekend away in Salem Mass. has me still thinking of witches and the whole witch trial hysteria.

If anyone else has an interest, PBS.org has a great story based on the show Secrets of the Dead. The theory that ergot, a fungus that grows on rye, could have been a cause for the witch hysteria.
Egot has LSD properties which explains a lot.

It sort of explains the ignorance of witches back then, but so many people today are still clueless as to what a witch is and is not.

So if you have any thoughts or comments on said subject....post it here, if not, just hijack it with Halloween nonsense.

Blessed be.

'Witch' Pardons Come Centuries Too Late

Fri Oct 29, 6:08 PM ET Strange News - AP

PRESTONPANS, Scotland - Accused witches — and their cats — executed during a wave of hysteria and religious ferment hundreds of years ago will be pardoned on Halloween in this Scottish township, a court official said Friday.

Sunday's ceremony will publicly pardon 81 people executed in the 16th and 17th centuries for being witches. The pardons have been granted under ancient feudal powers due to be abolished within weeks.

"There'll be no witches' hats, dress-ups or that sort of thing — it will be a fairly solemn occasion," said Adele Conn, spokeswoman for the baronial court granting the pardons.

More than 3,500 Scots, mainly woman and children, and their cats were killed in witch hunts. Many were condemned on flimsy evidence, such as owning a black cat or brewing homemade remedies.

Prestonpans region recorded one of the largest numbers of witch executions in Scotland, said Conn, who is the "mountjoye," or official spokeswoman, for the Barons Courts of Prestoungrange & Dolphinstoun.

Gordon Prestoungrange, the 14th baron, granted the pardons in the last session of his court, which is due to be abolished Nov. 28, she said.

"Most of those persons condemned for witchcraft within the jurisdiction of the Baron Courts of Prestoungrange and Dolphinstoun were convicted on the basis of spectral evidence — that is to say, prosecuting witnesses declared that they felt the presence of evil sprits or heard spirit voices," the court said in its written findings.

"Such spectral evidence is impossible to prove or to disprove; nor is it possible for the accused to cross-examine the spirit concerned. One is convicted upon the very making of such charges without any possibility of offering a defense."

The court declared an absolute pardon to all those convicted, "as well as to the cats concerned."

Conn said 15 local descendants of executed witches had been invited to attend the ceremony and inaugural Witches' Remembrance Day, which will become an annual event in the township each Halloween. The fishing village is located about 20 miles east of Edinburgh.

One of those descendants, graphic designer Andrew White, 39, said he was intrigued by the idea of having a potential witch in the family.

"You have to remember that in those days you could have got burned at the stake for just about anything," he said. "But I'll be trying my secret powers with the lottery next week."

White, who was told of his ancestor by the Barons Court just three weeks ago, said the community was welcoming of pardon.

"It's too late to apologize but it's a sort of symbolic recognition that these people were put to death for hysterical ignorance and paranoia," said local historian Roy Pugh, who presented evidence to the court supporting the pardons.

The last execution for witchcraft in Scotland was in 1727. Such cases were outlawed by the Witchcraft Act of 1735, which made it a crime only to pretend to be a witch.

Damn! I thought this was the sign-in thread for today's Witches Anonymous meeting. Am I in the wrong room or something?

So impersonating a Wiccan is illegal in England? Interesting.

For those who don't know, a female Wicca is called a witch

It's incredible just how many people misunderstand the ideas behind paganism, through simple prejudice.

A male Wiccan is also a witch. to call someone a warlock is insulting.

It's all about the earth and spirit, being a good person and giving thanks for what you're given. How tough is that to grasp?

Merrily met, my dear....<g>

I read that article about the Scottish pardons this morning in the local paper. I had had no idea such things had occurred there. Funny how certain episodes of history tend to be focussed on specific parts of the world, and you not always aware of similar things happening elsewhere.

I'd already heard the ergot theory. It's been propagated for quite a while now. Also, at least a few of the girls who made the initial accusations are thought...based on diaries and observations by people at the time as well as the court records...to possibly have suffered from what today would be several mental disorders.

Anyways, hope everyone has a Happy Halloween (Super Samhain? just to keep the alliteration going<g>)...I'm off to a Witches' Ball later tonight...

It's all very interesting reading.

I'm so jealous, I wish I was going to one. I'm trying to find a nice pentacle.

Check out your local SCA group and see when the next Kingdom level event is being held near to you. A lot of the merchants that frequent those things carry a fair number of jewelry and other items that double nicely for both medieval recreation and fashionably modern Paganism. <g>

And there's always mail-order and/or online purchasing...

I'll do just that, thank you.:rose:

If, it is a crime to just pretend to be a witch, it removes teh defense of saying I am not a witch, I was just pretending to be one. It also removes all defense that what you are accused of wasn't witchcraft, but some innoccuous activity that was misinterpreted as witchcraft. I.e, I can't prove you summoned a demon, but all I have to prove is you were acting like you were trying to.

The Witchcraft Act of 1735 is no longer on the statute book, it was repealed & replaced by the Fraudulent Mediums Act of 1951. So being a witch, or even pretending to be one, is no longer a crime here, nor is being a medium, but pretending to be a medium (& therefore committing fraud by getting people to pay for a service you can't offer) is.

I think witches are a fascinating subject.
There are still some places left in my country
where they tried witches by weighing them.
They are tourist attractions now.
Not even as a child could I find the courage
to step up on one of them.

LOL Scared to be found out perhaps.

I got a black cat and a new wart on my nose. I'm not sure if they've changed it this year or not. I guess we'll see when the monthly newsletter arrives, no?

p.s. I love the Heinlein quote in your siggy. :p

I really hate to do this, but I have to say farewell to the witch in my AV.

Still a witch at heart though. I think I will even change the religion in my NaNo effort to Wicca related.

:D

If you're finished with the witch in your AV, can I have her?

Don't know if this is of any interest to anyone, but I read an article a couple of years back where the writer was trying to unravel the myth of witches flying on broomsticks. Apparently, hundreds of years ago there were women who actually did 'ride' broomsticks. They used to coat the end in a herbal solution that made them hallucinate and feel like they were flying.

LOL

I know of a much more mundane explanation.
Seems there was a habit of leaping with sticks after harvest. Probably something to do with chasing bad spirits away. If you looked at it from a distance it would seem the women were flying through the air.
