But here, in this space, I try to reclaim that. I share whatā€™s real, what turns me on, what makes me feel powerful. And when someone sees that and responds to the energy, itā€™s a million times better than a throw away comment.

I also think that the men here on lit truly do help prove the latter wrong. I think women believe they need to look a certain way; and if they do fit that narrative of ā€œthe perfect girlā€ think that everyone wants that. They donā€™t. And being here has proven that.

I think the words ā€˜chase approvalā€™ is a a tricky one. I might challenge that a bit (but with a pinch of salt because I donā€™t know you and donā€™t wish to make assumptions). I wonder if ā€˜seeking acknowledgementā€™ can fit better? I find the word ā€˜approvalā€™ is all about the opinions and evaluation of yourself by others, in quite a critical way. As in, what happens if there isnā€™t approval? What are the consequences?

Acknowledgement, on the other hand, is more like a recognition of how you are or what youā€™ve done. I think chillax said ā€˜validationā€™? Which is also very cool, but what happens if we donā€™t feel like weā€™re getting validation? Does that make us invalid on a vulnerable day? Yikes. I think after all, weā€™re all looking for acknowledgement, because weā€™re social beings. Itā€™s a spectrum, so some people like more acknowledgement than others. As artists, do we seek approval for our work, or do we want it to be acknowledged, enjoyed and engaged with? And can we then say that about ourselves. I believe so.

Speaking personally, if I were to post a nekkid picture of myself online, I wouldnā€™t necessarily want someone to say Iā€™m sexy or fit enough to post it, but rather acknowledge that I did, so that I got some feedback. Bringing ourselves (or our work) forward and then experiencing tumbleweeds is grim. If I walk into a social gathering and say something, and nobody hears me or acknowledges what I say, Iā€™d be gone within 10 minutes. The discomfort of that! Uh!
