incense, fried food, oud, weed, sweat and secondhand leather all at once. The market is fucking beautiful, one moment you’re thumbing through stacks of vintage Levi’s, silver rings and retro records, but the next you’re watching a man in a cowboy hat deep-fry some sort crazy fusion of cuisines that he passes to you on a taster stick. It tastes hot and spicy but there’s no time to thank him because you’ve already been distracted by
a man with face tattoos selling VHS tapes and hand made jewellery. There are many hidden bars down graffiti-tagged alleys and walls covered in chewing gum and sprayed with piss but you don’t care because it’s fucking Camden.

Wear what you like, don those cowboy boots you only wore that one time for a fancy dress, buy that crazy hat you saw down one of the market stalls and wear it all day because everyone’s so unique there you stand out if you’re beige and boring.

Jerk chicken smoke blends with clouds of steam rising from Chinese dumplings. There anre Ethiopian lentils, falafel, churros, Polish pierogi, and fifteen different versions of vegan burgers if that’s your thing. Everyone is sat elbow to elbow at the benches in the stables, shouting over the music, licking sauce from their sticky fingers whilst being serenaded by a busker playing arctic monkeys. And then there’s the punk on the bridge holding the sign: “get a punk drunk.” He’s been there for about 15 years and is very much a part of the town. I’ve seen two of my favourite bands perform at Dingwall, in Camden central, the best venue for a sweaty and bassy evening.

Yeah. Camden has my heart.

I used to run gigs out of Worlds End and Underworld in Camden. Got a soft spot for that place too.

If in the Kings Cross area, it’s a beautiful walk past the church (Mary Wollstonecraft original grave) to Coaldrops Yard, pop in the floating bookshop …then walk down Regents Canal to Camden lock.

And as you rightly say, Brighton is amazing too. I’m there multiple times every year even though it’s impossible to park! 🤣
