I know we have a few computer experts on Lit so I have a question about setting up a wireless connection. I am just wonder if it is possible to connect to a strong wireless connection. I have a very low one in my house. I know you need some stuff, but not sure what I need for just one computer.

OK, explain strong vs. low. Are you talking signal strength or network speed? Basically what you need is an internet connection (usually a broadband always on of some kind), a wireless router (get one with a good firewall) and a computer wtih a wireless card.

CDW has a great Linksys kit with router and Notebook adapter for $90. Click here

This will run 802.11G, which will give you like 54mbps or something like that. I have this at home and at my office and it's plenty fast. Just make sure you enable lots of security on it to protect yourself.

I'm picking up a weak signal from one of my neighbors house. I am using a laptop with a wireless card inside if that is any help. So I need a broadband connection basically right?

You need broadband, and a wireless router that works with the wireless card in your laptop.

Question - how do you turn off broadcasting SSID? I have a Linksys Wireless-G for a pc and two laptops. If I turn off broadcasting SSID, will my laptops still be able to find the connection?

Are you trying to connect to your neighbors' or are you wanting to get one of your own?

If you turn off broadcasting SSID, you should still be able to use your own machines to connect. There should be directions on how to do this in the users manual of the router.

I want my own. It is just I am the only one in my house who wants. My mom and sister are fine with dial up, but it seems played out to me as I want to download and view videos. If I get broadband, do I need to do anything to phone jacks? We have a spare one for dial up, but I have seen wireless broadband. Is that a good way to good?

As the other response said ... check out the directions. It should give you an internet address which will allow you to change any of the security settings on your wireless; one is turning off SSID broadcast. However, the better way to assure security is to set up a key and make sure that you've got it entered in any computers on that network. Linksys does a great job of explaining this on their website.

Previous posters have addressed the How To issue but no one has mentioned the laptops. So...
If you turn on encryption for your router to stop the neighbours from using your broadband connection you will also need to set up the laptops to match the encryption key you apply to the router.

The whole idea is to keep other people out so you will need to share the SSID encryption key with all machines that you wish to have access to your network.
