winter vegetables

My uncle brought a bunch of the ugliest sweet potatoes I have ever seen. They're weird ass shapes that make them hard to eat. Like I know tubors grow in weird ass shapes, but these are like... spirals and shit. Fucked up shit I've never seen before.

I mean, they're good, they still taste like sweet potatoes, they're just real freaky looking.

Sadly, I let my garden return to the weeds.

But, veggies are a constant.

Looking for tough, big turnips.

what do you grow?

what do you eat?

Back in an apartment with no allotment or balcony so no growing this year.

I eat potatoes, sweet potatoes, leeks, shallots, carrots and pak choi.

How about you?

They are often in beef stew along with parsnips.

You can't fool me, google, I know what a carrot is.

Edit: If I've ever eaten a parsnip, I guarantee I thought it was a carrot. Because I've eaten a LOT of shit I thought was fucked up carrots, like those white carrots and shit.

Edit: HOLY SHIT WHITE CARROTS ARE RADISHES.

You know, I think that the moral of this story is that you can give me any food and tell me it's a carrot and I'll just unquestionably believe it. I'm a fucking idiot.

No white carrots are usually parsnips, unless they are cut up in squares, then they are turnips, if they have a slight bite to them they could be a radish, but radishes are usually eaten raw.

I'm looking at the pictures and what I was calling a white carrot is 100% a turnip.

I don't buy a lot of food, old people just give it to me in barrels or boxes from their gardens with no explanation of what it is. Like... that's just how I've lived my life. I never thought to question it.

My ass don't eat them raw, I mean, I do but I was also putting them in soups and cole slaw and shit because I genuinely never thought to look it up to check if it wasn't just some fucked up carrot before right now.

I was today years old when I learned that radishes weren't just fucked up carrots.

Edit: I don't like them. I thought they were shitty carrots. Like if you couldn't get good carrots you ate these.

Daikon radishes look like carrots, there are also some old heirloom ones that look that way.
I usually think of radishes as small round red things.

No, no, no. Not those delicate, small, pretty turnips. They are always flirting with Mr. Radish Spirit from Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away."

I want a turnip as big and as heavy as a bowling ball.

I would give it to Pookie to dismember.

i need to clean out the raised beds and plant carrots and radishes.

i love winter squashes. only one plant survived in my garden this year, a delicata squash. i'll have to research better companions for them next year. the pantry is stocked with acorn, butternut and spaghetti squash from the market. at this rate, they will be gone quick.

Acorn squash baked with butter and brown sugar and nutmeg.

Finest kind.

Or turned into a hearty soup with roasted carrots, onions, celery, garlic, and other veggies all pureed together in a heavy cream and chicken stock base.

You can use Acorn or Butternut squash or Pumpkin or any combination. You can add sweet potatoes too if you want.

Chunk/dice everything, coat in olive oil and sprinkle with S&P, Roast until dark on edges/corners. Once dark, put everything into a large saucepan and add 4 Cups of chicken stock. Bring to a simmer. Using an immersion blender, puree everything until no chunks remain. Stirring constantly, add 1/3 to 1/2 Cup of heavy cream or half & half.

Soup should be thick rather than thin. If you don't have an immersion blender, use a regular blender and puree in batches. Be careful because hot liquids tend to cause the lid to pop when pureed and spray the contents everywhere and cause burns. Leave a corner of the blender lid open and put a towel on top. Pulse a couple of times before going full tilt.

Some people add a tart Granny Smith apple to offset the sweetness from the roasting/caramelizing but I prefer mine without it.
