Recently installed windoze xp.

and I have a few problems with it.

First off my mic wont work over msn or netmeeting can hear them just fine but can they hear me nope! and yes I done all the right things in sound properties making sure mics not muted etc and have downloaded and installed the right soundcard drivers. Not a computer novice here.

Secondly cams not working either. downloaded and installed xp drivers for this also but nadda.

They worked just fine on windows me so no nothings faulty and needs replacing

A few system specs.

Pentium 3 1.13 cpu
Via apoolo pro chipset mainboard
512mb ram
Soundblaster live soundcard

Hmmm, need a new comp baby....(LoL) just kidding, thought I try and make ya laugh a bit. :D

Just a thought and no, I don't know if your motherboard has it. But a friend has to go into BIOS and disable on-board sound every time she does a hard crash. It conflicts with soundblaster.

First, just becuse they worked before doesn't mean they are fine now -- it isn't uncommon for hardware failures to occur in conjunction with software changes. That doesn't mean I think they DID fail, but you can't discount the possibility.

Does the Mic work with soundrecorder -- or whatever XP has for a basic WAV recorder.

I just upgraded my sound-card and had problems with various audio file types -- the solution was to set the soundproperties to "any available device" instead of the default "preferred device only" settings.

For the camera problem, are you sure that you downloaded the correct drivers for THAT camera. I'm rehabilitating a $7.50 P2/250MHz computer for my daughter to use and had to download three different sets of drivers before I got the right ones to make the generic PCI modem work. I discovered in the process that driver download sites aren't real clear about exactly which models require which driver set.

The difference in the USB drivers between WinME and WinXP might be the problem with your camera as well.

Make sure that the file dates on the USB drivers match the rest of the XP files because Windows historically has had a problem with overwriting old drivers properly when upgrading -- it may have left the WinME versions in place, or updating the Camera drivers might have replaced the USB drivers without mentioning it. (I had a friend's scanner do that to his system and it took him a year to figure it out.)

Is it possible that people arn't recieving you(voice and cam) because of the default firewall built into XP or are you running a router that has a harware firewall?

WinXP is also not very compliant with a lot of older hardware. When I upgraded to XP, I had to go buy a new cam cause my IBM cam wasn't supported.

Are you sure that USB port is working? Do any other devices work out of the USB port?

Very often, you have to remove the driver and let Windows add it again before it will work.

Ok the main problem seems to be the usb controller driver and lack of support by windows xp and via so basicialy a conflict

I have a VIA chipset based motherboard and a USB Web Camera which freezes under Microsoft XP. What can I do?

Answer:

General trouble shooting suggestions:

1) Ensure that you have USB enabled in BIOS.

2) Upgrade to the latest available BIOS.

3) Ensure that you are using XP compatible drivers and software for the web camera.

4) If you have tried various versions of drivers and software, completely uninstall the drivers and software and reinstall only the latest available versions so there are no conflicts.

5) Try different USB ports.

6) Some programs have known issues with Windows XP WIA drivers. Information can be found here.

7) Read this Microsoft article on troubleshooting USB under XP for further advice.

8) If all of the above general troubleshooting have not resolved the issue and you have a motherboard with KT133 chipset, buy a USB add-on card or use a previous version of Microsoft operating system. If you have any other chipset, contact your motherboard manufacturer and/or your web camera manufacturer for further advice. If you have a KT133 based motherboard and all of the above general troubleshooting have not resolved the issue, the reason we advise that you should buy a USB add-on card or not use WinXP is because, at the time the KT133 chipset went into mass production, many web cameras and Microsoft's Windows XP operating system were not even available for compatibility testing. The vast majority of motherboards based on the KT133 chipset work with new USB web cameras and WinXP with no problems. Some motherboards, however, because of board design and layout, are not compatible and the incompatibility cannot be resolved. VIA appreciates that some end users may be unhappy about this situation. VIA and our motherboard partners have stringent compatibility procedures, however no manufacturer can guarantee compatibility with future products. Owners of these motherboards will notice that they are not certified for use with Microsoft XP.

Damm via chipset motherboards

I now back on my tryed and trusted windows me

Did you look for a BIOS upgrade & the latest VIA drivers? Also, there's a seperate VIA USB driver not included with the 4-in-1 drivers.

And I agree about damn VIA chip sets. I don't buy motherboards with any VIA if I can help it.

Windows XP (I'm assuming you have XP Home) has different types of user accounts. A limited account may not allow the soft ware to run the program. I know that this type of account will not allow MSN Messenger, AIM or Netscape Messenger to run. Also, if the drivers have not been digitally accepted by Microsoft, the limited type account will not be able to run them. I had the same problem with the digital camera I have.

There is also a "run as" that works with programs. It works with games, and it may work with camera programs.

I bought the book "Window XP: The Missing Manual" by David Pogue. I highly reccomend it.
