Windows Sound file speed?

We have files that were recorded on one PC using Windows Sound Recorder.
Voice talking.
When playing them on a laptop, they speed up! Slowing them down makes them really sloooow, & speeding them up makes them too fast again.

Anyone know what could be causing this?

Sounds like a problem with different processor speeds, but all of the available formats in my version of SoundRecorder should be CPU independent because the sample rates are given as bits/second.

It my be that your version of sound recorder uses the CPU cycles instead of realtime clock "ticks" to manage the bit rate, in which case, you're probably out of luck with getting the sound to play right on the laptop.

If youcan convert the sound file to a different format with a different program -- on the original computer where the timimg is the same as when it was recorded -- you might be able to get the correct timing encoded proerly.

that it's kb/sec
I tried recording a test on this laptop once, and it apeared to play back too fast too, like a higher pitch.
It's a friend's PC so I don't have access to it now. I thought a sound file recorded in kb/sec would play at the same speed anywhere, but you are probably right about the CPU speed. I don't do this often.
Thanks. HH
