Hello!

Is there anyone who can help me with the following problem? I have a feeling the only way I can fix it is to re-install Windows again. Please tell me that's not the case. I am cringing at the thought of having to do this.

This is the error message I get when I try to run one of my cleaning programs.

1340: The inherited access control list (ACL) or access control entry (ACE) could not be built.

What does this mean? How did this problem happen. I've googled this and have found it...but there are no ways to fix it. I've never had this problem before until last night...it worked great for all of these months.

I'd be so grateful for help with this.

Networked?

You aren't running this over a network, are you?
Is it XP, or W2000?
I would try uninstalling and re-installing the program first, and getting the updates for it from the internet. Which one is it?

This is an indication that the cleaning program doesn't have "Adminstrative Privileges."

The solution is to logoff your computer and log back on as a username with Adminstrative Access.

I don't know if rebooting into Safe Mode will give the administrative access your need or not.

Your Wondows Help file should have an explanation of "Adminstrative Access" or "Administrator Access."

Thank you, MagicFingers and Weird Harold. I was wondering about the Administrative stuff, too. The thought of re-installing Windows frightened the heck out of me.

Harold, there is only one log-on name...the Administrative stuff is all on the one log-on. I decided it was better that way, but I'm wondering if an update changed that without me knowing about it.

What I did for the moment, which is a temporary fix, was to do a System Restore. I took it back to last Friday when it all worked great and I tried the cleaning program and it worked just fine. I know that's not really an answer, but for the moment it's all I could do.

Thank you both for the replies. I really appreciate it so much. I'm not very good with all of this "computer stuff". It's baffling and gives me hives. HA!

It sounds like the access permissions for your single user got corrupted somehow. Using System Restore is a good solution.

I would recomend that you set up another login with full administrative priveleges as backup in case something similar happens again.

An inactive username isn't usually vulnerable to a glitch that troubles an active uername -- whether it's accidental access list corruption or the deliberate action of malware.
