End of the day, I feel that my life is better/easier because of the benefits I receive from these devices and services. I have not noticed an adverse effect because I use them. Most of this is paranoia, frankly. There's 300 million people in this country. Does anyone really believe their data is being individually watched? Seriously?

From what I've read, the answer, generally, is YES.
Of course, it takes a H U G E set of computers to do it, but that's Government for ya!

Okay. But what are they watching FOR? To get an advance read of my next Lit story posting? They sure as hell aren't trying to read that shit, and there aren't enough people employed there to do it.

I know. Illegal search and all, but if they thwart major terrorist activity in this way and save thousands of innocent lives, that's a tradeoff I'm willing to make. Yes, I get the slippery slope. I do.

They're damned if they do, and damned if they don't. If shit starts blowing up all around us, people will be demanding to know why the government isn't doing something to stop it from happening.

There are no perfect answers here. That's really the truth of the matter.

They aren't running ads on your desktop or anything like that, Zeb. They are trying to pull you into their ecosystem much as Google has with their offerings. Should you go onto Bing or other Microsoft pages, or use Cortana, then results will be tailored based upon my information and usage.

As I noted above, such things can be convenient as hell. For example, when we leave the city every Friday evening, Google Now already knows that I do that, and gives me a traffic report ahead of time. It knows when I leave for work, and what method I take...and provides me with information I may need about that route. MS and Cortana want to do the same thing.

For some as yet unknown reason, they think I speak Spanish. Over half the ads are in Spanish; in some it's more like three-quarters. The same ads I get on other sites in English, but in Spanish.

Have you considered "AdBlock Plus" ?

If your lot does it for the "same reason" as our lot, it has to do with 'anti-terrorism' and similar 'National Issues'. For example, the software can look for words like "semtex" and "bomb" (a simplified concept, I know) and identify the originator and recipient.

Of course, it started when Google And the others wanted to identify what sort of adverts we all needed (that's why I use AdBlock).
Then the Big Boys realised that they could use something like this . . . .

The truth of the matter is people such as yourselves attempt to justify living your lives in fear that something might happen to you with the idea that an all-encompassing, all-watching government will somehow protect you.

If you think having your activities being watched and scrutinized by government is the way to go, ask the people of Russia or North Korea how that's working out.

You are more likely to be killed in a car accident, shot by your neighbor or die of a heart attack than you are by a terrorist attack.

The government has zero reason to wholesale spy on its citizens who have and are doing nothing wrong. To quote James Madison, the father of The Constitution:

Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations;. . .

And further:

Perhaps it is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at home is to be charged against provisions against danger, real or pretended from abroad.

As the article I posted has somehow taken a track down a different line...

Did anyone read about the Jeep that was hacked and had its steering and other stuff taken over. The guy in the car couldn't do anything but sit there and watch as the jeep ran off the road. Of course it was at a stately 3 miles an hour, but hey. (Yes it was planned...to show how easy it is to take over those new cars equipped with WiFi)

They followed up the next week with a new Corvette.

Now that's something to worry about. Anyone with newer autos with WiFi, it seems, can be taken over by a hacker.

The car companies are working diligently to close the security holes.

(Wondering: Wouldn't the car stop if you turned off the key? Doesn't the WiFi depend on the car being on?)

Would it not be easier to forego a lot of this electronics and get back to the simple stuff ?
It's difficult to hack into a steering rack or a manual gearbox!

I keep telling people analog is still better for many things but all I keep hearing is, "Shiny! Shiny!"

While some people will be forced to use it, I can clearly see Microsoft losing more market share because of their monolithic attempt to dictate to people what they can and can't do with something they have purchased.

Despite their bloated prices, I am considering the switch to Apple. Not tomorrow, not next week, but possibly sometime.

And there you have it, Windows 10 is one big spybot. It must be awfully slow to boot, collecting all that data. Of course they must have pulled a lot of loop untils out of the code to make it appear to be a little more speedy than Win8. And with so much collecting going on, how has the OS have anytime to run the programs it's supposed to be running?

I'll pass. Probably switch to Linux when Win7 isn't supported anymore.

That doesn't answer the question. If you use Win 7, what is it about Win 8 that makes the experience any different for you? What makes it very fucked up for a Win 7 user?

I don't know about others, but for me it is how unimaginably difficult they made it to reach system setting, installed programs, the file system, etc.

In windows 7 there was a nice menu of installed software. If I wanted to, I could easily create a shortcut on my desktop that would allow me to click and run my most popular software.

In windows 8.1 I either have to scroll through a nearly endless array of tiles of software that microsoft wants me to buy to get to my installed programs or use a very awkward search system. Sure, I can still do what I want, but it isn't easy anymore. I have managed, finally, to get my desktop shortcuts set up for most of my most used software and it makes the daily use less frustrating, but still when I go to use a program I only use infrequently I'm back to the same old annoying "Just let me do what I want!" frustration.

System settings are the same way. I have a Toshiba laptop and when I wanted to turn the tap to click feature off on the touch pad I spent two days trying to figure out how to do it. When I finally found an article on how to accomplish the task, I literally groaned out loud. It was a nightmare process. It should have been, click on settings, choose device, choose touchpad, change settings. Nope, This post doesn't have enough room to list out what had to be done to do that simple little thing.

You asked. I get it that you love Windows 8.1. Good for you. Most of the world, me included, hated it.
