Windows 10 with WORDS?

I had a similar problem with my very old stories written with WordStar 2000+. They were .ws2 files.

I found that if I copied the files, renamed them as .txt files, and then stripped off the WordStar headers I had the basic text which I could then import into Word. There were a few glitches with paragraphing but I had 95% of the original story including ALL the words.

Not with the older WORDS. All I see are a few ZZZ's and other codes. No real words. Also Win10 does not come with any Office or Words program.
Yet when I copied my Bookmarks they came out JSON format and among the dots and dashes were the Bookmarks. Lucky for me the store computer guy was able to reformat my bookmarks.
Smart people can convert what I have but I barely have the skills to turn the tower on. It's been interesting and it shows there are some good members here.

Try Apache Open Office. Completely MS Word compatible.

It sure sounds to me as if you're trying to open *.wps files that were written using Microsoft Works (not Microsoft Word).

I've opened a version 6 .wps file with Word 2003 without a problem. It even saved it as one. There is a conversion add-in you have to down load, but it works.

Yes, he is working with Microshaft Works and not Office Word. wps files not doc files.

Word 2007 was the last year Microfshaft packed the converter for wps. I started out using works and loved it. Everyone did back then. It was faster and easier to use than Office and free. It was basically a cut down version of office. Simple and easy but Microshaft wasn't making any money off it.

Like Zeb said, Office word from 2003 to 2007 will convert them but you have to add in the converter from the original office disc.

Before scraping off and using the Office code at $162 I am trying the new free one month Office 365 installed in Win 10 on the new tower. First I had to type in my name, rank, and SS number plus my blood type and first born.

It seems to convert the few stories I have ready but it's slow, mostly confusing, and a pain in the butt. So it and Office Home & Student 2016 will sort of work if you like throwing money away.

If I get what old stories I need from the WORDS format converted and in a decent format to open, copy, and paste I won't need Office 2016.
But I worry that at the end of the free month if those stories will also become useless codes. Therefore the reconverting to something else.
I can still buy Office Home & Student 2016 again.

Apparently Microsoft is so interested in money they don't care about old customers. I notice the new Office is set up for mobil devices and everything is hiding in a Cloud for all the world to see.
The younger generation never had the Works WORDS format and they are who has everything mobil to play with.
Wait a few years when it all changes again and they will have to begin again and again.
It was easier when I chiseled my words on stone tablets, scribbled on canvas scrolls, and drew on my cave walls!
