Windows 10 with WORDS?

I looked everywhere in Lit and hope this is a suitable place to ask.

It seemed so easy and simple buying a new tower. I am NOT a computer geek. I have several hundred stories written in Win WORDS 9.
I bought a new HP tower with no way to read, copy, paste those old stories to Literotica.
The store computer geek set up Open Office and Zamzar video converter.
Open Office gives me a blank page to write new stories. Zamzar does convert one old story at a time with a readable format. At this rate it will take forever to get my old stories converted to post in Literotica. Making it worse, I have them in several different folders so one magic click won't do it.

So, getting desperate, I paid $162 for Office Home & Student 2016. I was told I'll still need Microsoft Works 6-9 file converter, free. I haven't tried installing Office 2016 yet.

My question is what did all of you writers with old stories in Win WORD formats do when you bought Win 10?

Thanks, Denny

I had no problem going from Windows 8 to Windows 10. I never heard of Windows 9.

I use Microsoft Office for Home & Student for 2016 and have no problem copying and pasting my stories from Word to Literotica.

You don't need to buy anything else or any sort of converter. It sounds like you have everything you need.

Denny

Thank you so much. I've been messing with this a month using Open Office.
I had an old instalation disc called WinWords 9.

The computer was Win 8.1 and now I have Win 10.
I was afraid to install the Office Home & Student with the code because I was told I'd also need a converter program.

To be safe I'll wait till my son stops this afternoon. He knows way more about computers than I do. I only know the basics.

Again thanks. I have a lot of crappy stories to add to Lit.

I save most of my stories as Win97 compatible i.e. .doc files.

I also convert them to .txt without line breaks so I can put them on my e-reader.

I'm still using Word 2007 and see no reason - yet - to upgrade. It does far more than I need to use.

I'm still using Word 2000 with not problems. I have it stripped and customized to the way I like it so why change. I've never had anyone, especially publishers or editors complain in the least.

Windblows stopped at number 7 as far as I'm concerned.

Denny

Thanks for the replies. My old computer was slow and worn out like me. I put off buying a new tower with Win 10 for a long time. Still I expected a WORDS program would be all I need to still read my stories. All I get is XXYY crap.
I considered buying a tower with Win 7 or 8. I just had to have the latest.

It's not really the money. I just feel they are screwing with us to make us buy their special programs. Heck now I get the same ads I see on pay TV in my yahoo mail.

Back when we first got satellite TV there were no ads and I could watch surgery, porn, and company business meetings. Now I can buy car insurance during those long commercial breaks.

I'll just scrape off the secret code on the $150 piece of paper and see what happens.
I can't be alone with Win WORDS as my story program.

You should be able to open your windows .doc files with Open office. If that doesn't work, download Libre office, also free, it does open windows .doc files, then either saves them as .odt or as windows .doc or several other formats including .txt or .rtf.

Denny

Thanks Greg. My problem is WORDS won't show doc files to change it.
I'll end up using the code on Office home 2016 and hope. So far I haven't scrapped the code.

If I do ever get my WORDS to show I'll just upset the real Lit writers with more crappy true stories written like a grade school girl.

Open the Open Office, go to 'open files', find the folder the .doc files are kept, open them with Open Office. You don't need to open them with words. Open Office should change the format.

I used to use open office, and changed all my old .doc files that way. I now use Libre Office, which is an offshoot, but even after all these years Open Office should still work the same way.

I prefer to use Libre/Open Office, and will never go back to Word.

Thanks again. I'll check Open Office again. Right now I only have a few stories in the hard drive. Everything is on a portable in case my son comes over to help.
Our family and friends don't know my wife is a bad girl.

Nothing is in an Open Office folder.

Denny

Do you mean Windows Word ?

~Seen this one:- https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/WINWORD.EXE-21308.html
Which would seem to indicate a bit of a problem which needs fixing first.

You don't actually NEED a Word Proc (Huh!) to write.
I comment to you Jarte which sits on Windows Notepad and turns it into a very convenient editor.

I use Word 2003 (I'd rather use Word 97, but. . . .).
:):)A few computers ago I had a Dell. It came with Windows Works WORD 9 on a disc.
Nothing to do with Win 7-8-10. I also used that disc when I bought a new HP tower. It was Win 8 then 8.1. Worked fine.
Now with Win 10 all my stories are trapped on a scrambled format.
I can write new stories using Open Office but I wasn't finished with my old stories which are WORD formated.

I've been told that Win10 does not let us use most old programs. In other words we get less and pay more. Not even a monitor and the keyboard is crap.

I have in my clammy paws Microsoft Office Home & Student 2016 which is nothing but a card with a code to install. If I can get my old stories converted in some easy way I can return the card.
So far everything I read and try gets too confusing and I only get the story in a secret code.
However I'd gladly use the $150 card if it actually lets my old stories be visble as real words.

It's too late to back up. I reset the old tower to like it was when I bought it five years ago after saving everything on a portable hard drive.
So all old stories are on the hard drive but not useable.

I suggest you either get an "official" convertor, or the simplest Text Editor you can find.
Good Luck

OpenOffice will read all the Word file formats and save in that format. No need to purchase anything.

Thank you. Everyone with Windows 10 can't be having this problem.

I haven't posted any stories since before we moved away last summer. I should have spent more time on stories and less on these boards.

Being computer illiterate I've been playing on Open Office often and can't find a way to convert Works Words 9 to a readable format.
That must be at least a seven or eight year old program. Fine had I kept Win 7 or 8.
I even used Zamzar converter and sent a few stories to my email address. Then I copy and paste to Open Office. I'll never live long enough to convert that many stories.

At least a good friend is sending some of the older stories back in a readable format so all but the newer stories will be saved.
The bad part of this is most of those are posted in Lit.
I could just give up. But that's no fun.

Thanks Zeb Carter and everyone else for the input.

Try this link...https://www*****wire.com/wps-file-2622400

I assume the file types are .wps as that was what Works used. I do have word, which can open .wps files Version 6 - 9. If you would like to email them let me know in a PM and I'll give you my secure email. I'll send them back in a format OpenOffice can use without a problem.

Don't look for a convert process, just click on the file via the open file process using the all files file format option. If it can't open it, it will tell you.

This. Everything since is called Linux. I am so happy I made the change.

I do everything as .rtf files, and those work everywhere - every Windows platform, Linux, you name it.

"Words" or "Works"? Go to help, then about, and relay the exact program name and if listed, the name of the software and publisher?

"Word" is Microsoft's flagship word processor, a worldwide standard. "Works" is well known, a Microsoft product, but mostly, their low end product. Finally, there are a few products named "Words" (plural), relatively obscure.

Which is it you had on the old computer? To offer help, we would need to know exactly what you have.

A couple of Office programs back, Microshaft abandoned Works. They gave works away to get people to use Office but that didn't work out so they abandoned it. Take Zeb up on his offer to convert, return your copy of Office, and get your money back. Use Open Office, you'll be time and money ahead. The new copy of Office won't open your files.

I use LibreOffice (free download) and work back and forth with Word files with no problems.

Denny Again

Again, thanks for the suggestions.
Up until now with Win 95 thru Win 8 I was using Mic. Works WORD 9. off an older disc. Back then we didn't need secret codes or one time rip offs. Supposedly out from around 1995 thru 2003. I'm just guessing. I've read so many things it gets blurry.

According to Office Home & Student 2016 information it will work just like the older WORDS but appear slightly different. Sort of like Win 8 and Win 10.
I can probably take the free one month Office 365 and see what happens. It's pre-installed along with Office 2016 just begging for money.

With millions of people using the older Mic WORDS with millions of pre Win 10 WORD documents, and millions now using Win 10, I can't believe someone else isn't using Office 365 and Office Home 2016, commenting that it does or does not reveal old WORDS stories.
It must work or there would be more people complaining.

Ok. So forgive me, I'm inferring a few things:

I get the impression maybe you're first having trouble getting all your old stories from the old computer to the new? Is that the case? I understand it may be awkward to ask your son for help with "Hey son, can you move my hundreds of erotica stories too?" ;-) Watch closely what he does, with all the innocent stuff, then try to recreate.

Next, I'm partly guessing, but there's quite likely no need to convert at all, because it'll just open and work automatically with a Microsoft based word processor. If you have Word, including the student edition, Office 365, and quite possibly, also the 100 percent free "Word Online", you hopefully can open each old works file directly whenever you need it, once it's on the same computer. (Word Online may involve a leap of faith to storing it online. It's a deal with the devil).

One thing you ARE partially stuck with though, and it's not entirely a bad thing, is getting accustomed to things that have changed in the programs you've used. That's just the way it is, but just as you probably have survived Lit's new interface you'll survive Windows 10 too.

Denny

Again thanks jsmiam.
I already put everything from the old hard drive into a small portable hard drive.
After that I put the old tower back to the day I got it. Left it blank and did nothing to it. So there is no going back.

Since this is a touchy situation I only copied a dozen "clean" car and motorcycle small stories to the new tower hard drive under DOCUMENTS.

The store Geek tried to set me up with a few programs including Open Office. He was able to convert those stories one at a time but since I'm not Geekish his directions were Greekish to me! Something about a program converter and sending myself emails.

I can use Open Office's blank pages to write new stories. That's no problem.

After weeks of screwing around I just bought the Office Home & Student 2016. I'm fairly certain it will open the old WORDS stories but since my oldest son, 25 miles away, decided to get the flue for the 25th time this year he can't help me until maybe tomorrow.

If he comes over Sunday I may end up with the Office 2016 and the flu. Or I can drive 1100 miles south to get our adopted son to do it.
It ain't easy being an old pervert.
