I am having an annoying problem and hope someone(HINT HAROLD HINT) has the solution. I Just did about 30 updates on my windows xp home edition this weekend.(i was really behind) and now if i let my computer sit idle for about 3-4 minutes it automaticlly logs me out regardless of if I have programs open. I Havent lost any data but this really bugs me when I am trying to take care of my kid or dinner or anything else that distracts me from the comp. Any idea how i can shut this feature off.

I'm not on my xp computer right now, But i do remember seeing a choice about do not use auto disconnect.

Our friend the right click

I dont run XP, still stuck with the first version of 98. But it seems that if you right click on the desktop and select properties, a set of tabs will come up. Click each tab and read the contents, one of these tabs are bound to have the log out options and adjustments. good luck, if you have any questions, email me at chalmation99@yahoo.com

A new virus has been in the news that causes shutdowns. Could you be experiencing this?

Microsoft has a patch written as well as a removal tool. It was published July 16th and all the major antivirus companies have a removal tool also. I heard that their removal toll links to Microsoft.

Strangly this is not part of critical updates. At least it was not.

It isnt the virus...ive been there and done that. I do know what you are talking about though. I run XP and it does the same thing. I went in and shut off the feature for automatic sleep mode or whatever the hell it was. It didnt help though, it still does it. Maybe Ill look into it, see if I can find it. If so, ill try to let you know.

I have highspeed so i dont know if this will work or not, but try going to: control panel > network connections > right click on your net connection and in one of the three tabs there should be an option to shut off auto-disconnect.
hope this helps.

I think it could this:

Go to your screen saver setting (control panel, display, screen saver tab) next to the time there is a check box labled (On Resume, display welcome screen). Unchecking that would cause it to return logged in as opposed to taking you to the login screen.

???

What do you mean by "it automatically logs me out"?

Once you log back in, are you back where you were before or do you have to re-start everything?

If you are back where you were, then it is probably just your system going into sleep mode. The fix is below:

Click on Start ~ Control Panel
Choose Performance and Maintenance
Choose the Control Panel Icon ~ Power Options
In there you should be able to turn off sleep mode

If you have to start over from the beginning when you log back in then you may have the virus beachtime is talking about. The virus restarts your system as you try to do various things. The name of the virus is Worm_MSBLAST. Fix:

Check your antivirus software web site. This bug has been all over the news for the past 2 days and all of the big antivirus companies have fixes on their sites at this point. You will probably have to download a patch from Microsoft and also update your antivirus software to the latest and greatest pattern file.

If you are still having problems after these 2 then repost and we will try and help
