Wilford Brimley Dead at 85

I'm kinda of embarrassed because A) I thought he was already dead and B) because I'm surprised he wasn't more than 85.

He did seem older. He really was a good actor. He looked 85 on Seinfeld 25 years ado.

One of the more amusing things on Twitter is the "Brimley/Cocoon Line," which announces when various public figures have exceeded Brimley's age on the day the movie Cocoon was released. (some of the recent people who have gone over the line: Gwen Stefani, Brett Favre, and Matthew McConaughey). He was very believable as a really old guy in that movie, and he was just 50 and change.

His role in The Firm was interesting. By that time he was established in pop culture as a cuddly grandpa, but he always had an underrated ability to project authority and menace, and that film made good use of the incongruity: "No wonder no one suspects this firm is up to no good — their head of security is Wilford Fucking Brimley."

He didn't seem to work too much after that. I'm not sure his health was up to it, and because he got into acting as a second career, he probably didn't care so much about continuing to do it into old age.

Eh. Wrong thread.

He was also a rodeo team roper.
You can look it up.
There might even be a Lit member who photographed him on horseback.
