I managed to regain my composure and behave like a lady after listening to Buck's explanation. I didn't realize how my former slave had suffered at the hands of that evil sheriff who had almost had his way with me...thank God we were all together again and I sensed Bucks loyalty to me instead of my bitter rival. I was willing to share my stud with dear Lacy who was family but Daphne was another matter entirely. On the other hand she was destitute, having lost her husband and property but did have gold. Perhaps some arrangement could be agreed upon...
Once we gathered in the pallor, I told Becky to fetch us all some refreshing sweet tea. " I am so sorry for acting like a bitch lately, please forgive me. The last few weeks have been devastating for us, I have lost my husband, God only knows where he is hiding, and all our slaves, not to mention most of our crops are rotting in the field and livestock which the yankees stole for themselves..." I looked directly at the yankee captain...
" Pardon me madam, these are the spoils of war but at least your plantation has been spared from total destruction. " he said.
" Yes and I am grateful sir but Twin Oaks no longer belongs to me, unless I can pay off my husbands gambling debt to some french carpetbagger. Not that this concerns you young captain, despite your side winning the war. " I said sitting down and crossing my legs.
" I can sympathize Mrs. Anderson and I am sorry. However I will sure your plantation is spared and perhaps in the future you will be able to retain your home and rebuild. I wish there was more that I could do to help you and your beautiful niece. Until then I must return to my unit but after the war is over I intend return and check on your welfare if I may. "
Lacy squeezed his arm, " I look forward to that sir. In the meantime I will think about your offer. I have never been up north. "
" Against my better judgement Daphne I am willing to be generous and offer you a room here until you decide what to do in the near future. " We would discuss the details later in privacy and Mr. Buck was off limits of course. For the time being my loyal black stud served only me exclusively...I missed him and wanted him in my bed this evening to serve me as his mistress...
